Electrical And Lighting

Q)Which headlights are fitted to my car?
A) Although the 206 has many after market headlights available, the standard options were

**ATTENTION** How to Disconnect the Battery Safely

Multiplexed Electrical System
When disconnecting the battery to do electrics, or just to change it, you need to follow this guide. Failure to do this could result in a £600 bill from Peugeot!
* Put down the drivers window.
* Pop and Open the bonnet. Shut ALL DOORS apart from the bonnet.
* Leave the car for at least 3 minutes. This allows the BSI to shut down and go to "sleep."
* Disconnect the clamps on the battery, and change/do electrics/whatever you are planning to do. If performing a soft reset, leave the battery disconnected for a few minutes

* When reconnecting, reattach the clamps on the battery. Don't shut the bonnet yet. Leave the car for a few more minutes. This allows the car to settle.
* Lean through the drivers window, and turn the sidelights on. (Don't open the door.)
* This is called a "Soft Start" for the BSI.
* Let the car finish thinking about everything, and check all the systems etc.
* Start the car.

Non-plexed Electrical System
* You may need your radio code upon reconnection
* If your car has a Peugeot anti-theft alarm system, disable this
* Disconnect the negative terminal first
* Disconnect the positive terminal
* Complete intentions

* Now to re-connect, Connect the positive terminal first
* Connect the negative terminal
* Before starting the engine for the first time, turn on the ignition and wait for 10 seconds to initialise the various electronic control units
* Activate alarm system, if you have one

A) Multiplexed is sometimes referred to as mux or plexed. Non-plexed is sometimes referred to as pre-plexed.
Multiplexed cars were manufactured from October 2001. The easiest way to tell if you car is non-plexed or multiplexed is by the radio stalk next to the steering wheel. If your car is multiplexed your radio stalk will look like this

Q) Do I have sports or non-sports bumpers?

A) There are 2 sized fog lights, sports and non-sports. Non-sports are smaller than sport ones so they don't fit the sports bumper.

Q) Can I upgrade to sports bumpers, if I have non-sport bumpers now?
A) Yes you can, you will need to make sure you get bumper moulding for sports bumpers. You will also need sport bumper with non-sport wing arch liners. You will need the following PSA part numbers 7136 CZ and 7136 CY, they cost approx £25 for them both.

Q) Can I upgrade to sport wings?
A) Yes you can, but you need a sports bumper as well. You will also need to buy sport arch liners.

Q) Will these alloys fit my car?
A) The PCD should be 4x108, the offset should be 25-28 and the bore 65.1

Q) Will alloys from another 206 fit my car?
A) Yes.

Q) What size spacers do I need for my alloys?
A) That will depend on the current offset of your alloys. Eg a offset of 35 will need 10mm spacers.

Q) Will a 3 door interior fit a 5 door car (vice-versa)?
A) The seats are interchangeable between both cars However when fitting 5 door front seats to a 3 door the car will FAIL the MOT due to safety reasons. The doorcards are NOT interchangeable due to them been different sizes and shapes.

Q) Will a 206cc interior fit a hatchback?
A) Only the front seats and front door cards will fit a 3 door model hatchback and only the front seats will fit a 5 door model hatchback

Suspension and Braking

Q) Lowering recommendations for the 206?
A) On the 206 it has springs on the front and torsion bars on the rear. So in order to lower your car you will need new springs for the front and have the torsion bar re-adjusted (I would recommend a garage do this for you). It is also recommended that when lowering that you upgrade your standard shocks. Bilstein Shocks and Eibach springs are highly recommended by many users of this site.

Performance
Q)The different intake systems?
A)
Replacement panel filters.
By replacing the standard panel filter that is fitted by the manufacturer you could gain an increase in top end horsepower. Standard air filters are usually made from a lower grade material than performance air filters. With periodic maintenance, a performance air filter will last a lot longer.

Induction Kits.
An induction kit replaces the standard air box and air filter fitted by the manufacturer with a cone filter. By getting the cone filter closer to cold air entering the engine bay you increase the density of the air entering your engine. Which could increase horsepower if fitted according to the manufacturers instructions.

Cold air intakes.
Going one step further than the induction kit the cold air intake routes cold air directly from the front of your car into the engine. This ensures a flow of cold air and can increase horsepower.

A) There are various kits to choose from and are recommended by some members Typhoon, Pipercross and GSR

Problem:
The magnets aren't probably strong enough to actually realign the molecules. If they are then great! But - what happens when the fuel continues into the fuel rail / along the fuel line where there is no magnet? They'll just go back to how they were.

Q) Can I put a 2.0 GTi engine in my 1.1 car?
A) Technically yes, but it will be a severe ballache and will cost a lot of money. Also the insurance will probably be more expensive with a engine transplant than buying a GTi car. This is the same with other eninge transplants.




In Car Entertainment
Q) I have a question about my in-car entertainment

Q) Radio stalk adapters, which one?
A) [Click Here]

Q) My head unit is losing its memory?
A) The Red and Yellow wires supply the Headunit with the following:

Constant low level power (yellow) - this is direct from battery and stays live even when your car is off, it allows your headunit to have enough power to keep its memory settings

Ignition feed (red) - When the car is running, the headunit is supplied with more power from ignition to power it for general use.

With many h/u, these two wires dont come set up the right way round for the 206, so your h/u will run off low level power when on, and may cut out when the volume is turned up (as it doesnt have enough power going to it). Also, as the memory feed is coming from ignition, when the car stops running, this feed stops too, and the headunit loses its memory settings. Switching these two wires around fixes the problem. Many new headunits come with connectors that allows you to easily change the wires around.

This is why that red wire is used but both red and yellow needs fuses and needs connecting to h/u

Q) My head unit won't turn on/off with ignition?
A) If your car is Multiplexed.
To elaborate the head unit will 'wake up' and 'shutdown' along side the BSI (Bulti-in system interface).

Therefore when unlocking the car the HU will turn on / display time etc as the unlocking wakes up the BSI to unlock the doors etc and when the BSI shuts off after 3 minutes the headunit will also follow suit. The shutdown of the BSI will be 3 minutes after activating the central locking / alarm / closing drivers door when getting out and locking it.

This doesn't affect a Pre-Plexed 206.

Q) What size speakers does my car have?

Common Problems
Q)My engine management light is on, what does it mean?
A) It means your ECU has detected a fault, your car requires a diagnostic test. If it flashes when driving, reduce the vehicle speed immediately until the light illuminates constantly. If it continues to flash, avoid heavy acceleration and high engine speed, stop the vehicle and have it checked immediately.

Many members have fault code readers, and are happy to help people nearby.

Q)What is Peugeot Planet 2000 (PP2000)?
A)PP2000 is the dealer spec software. Although the software is readily available on the internet, the main part is the interface. Without this interface, the software is useless.
 

It's better than the normal code readers as you can get more detail on a fault. It also allows you to get the faults that normal readers won't read like airbags. It can run actuator tests for the various functions of the car to make sure components are working correctly. You can pair keys and immo chips with it. VIN code OEM radios and change settings in the BSI to activate/deactivate some of the locked functions like rear wiper coming on when you select reverse and auto lock (dependant on if the software is in the BSI). Only thing you can't really do is software updates. You need to be connected to Peugeot servers for that and the cloned set up doesn't like it. You should also be wary of changing any BSI settings with cloned software as you could get irreparable issues and could cost upwards of £600 to put right.

Q)Where can I find someone with Peugeot Planet 2000 (PP2000)?
A) Many members have PP2000. Some are happy to use it to help others. Take a look at the map and see if someone is near you.

Q)I have been given this fault code. What does it mean?
A) Many of the fault codes flagged up by fault code readers are generic eg PXXXX. An explanation of these codes can be found here

This is a generic warning message on Peugeot and Citroen cars.

It generally means that there is a fault within the emissions circuit. However it does not necessarily mean that there is a fault with the CAT or lambda sensors.

It could be one of many sensors or faults that causes the ECU to detect a fault and could led to this error message been displayed.

If you see this error message, you need a fault code scan.

Do not go buying and changing parts if you haven't had a fault code scan, as more than likely you will be wasting your money.

Also disconnecting the battery will not delete these error codes, as they are stored in the ECU until fixed and cleared.

Basically, this message could mean one of a thousand problems, so you are p**sing in the wind without retrieving the fault codes.

Q) Does your car suffer from any of these problems:-
*engine, exhaust and geabox wobbled madly side to side.
*Car wouldn't move fast only about 20mph all the way to the garage
*car kept cutting out
*all lights kept flashing on dash
*flames shooting out the exhaust

A) You may need your coil pack replacing

Q) My brake lights are constantly on?
A) Check the white connector box under the glovebox, someone will have knocked it out.

Q) What pressure should I have in my tyres?
A) 32-34psi all around is the average.

Q) My MFD has stopped working?
A) The fuse may have blown or the bulbs need replacing or if you have fitted a aftermarket headunit you my need an adapter.

Q) Is my battery flat?
A) Take it for a test 9/10 car garages or automotive shops will test them for free. If you have a multimeter you can check it yourself. Guide here

Q} Can I jump start my 206?
A} You can, but you run the risk of damage being caused to the semiconductors. Follow this guide to minimise the risk, better still remove the battery from the car and give it a good overnight charge.

Q) What does 'Eco Mode' mean?
A) This warning only appears on a multiplexed 206. The car goes into eco mode to prevent the battery from draining. EG if you accidently leave the radio on.

Q) My door locks keep bouncing, every time I lock my car the doors unlock?
A) The solenoids in the door have failed, you need new ones.

Q) My airbag light is flashing, what does it mean?

Q) My car won't start
A) If your car won't start then it could be due to your vehicle's immobiliser system.
The following is the best way to isolate the problem:-

* Check the VERY obvious but sometimes overlooked first - Is there petrol in the vehicle? Is the battery flat? Are the connections to the battery loose?

* If the engine occasionally splutters as if it is just about to start but doesn't fire up fully, starts and keeps cutting out or turns over very slowly then this is likely not related to the immobilser.

* If the engine won't turn over at all (no sound when turning key) or the starter motor just continues to turn but the engine won't fire you may have immobilser issues. Many modern vehicles do have an immobiliser warning light on the dashboard (usually a sillhouette of a key) - check your manual. But some vehicles will not have this warning light. And if the immobiliser is not factory fitted then the light will not come on.

* Do the following:-
- Lock up the vehicle using the remote if equipped and open again. This may reset the immobiliser. Then try and start the vehicle

- Check the fuel cut off button if you have one, it is located to the back of the battery normally either red or black. Normal procedure is to press the button.

- Next, find any spare keys and try them. This will rule out any problems with the transponder chip within your key. Although this does not rule out problems with the transponder aerial.

- Disconnect the vehicle's battery for 5 to 10 minutes, reconnect and then try starting the vehicle. Again this may reset the immobiliser/ECU. Follow the relevant procedure further up in this thread.

- If all this fails then further investigation will be required by a specialist.

Immobilsers work in several ways:

- disconnect voltage to HT leads/coil pack and subsequently stop spark plugs from firing

- disconnect voltage from fuel pump

- disconnect voltage from starter motor

Depending on the vehicle the immobiliser system may employ any combination or all of the above.

If the starter motor is turning then the usual course of action an engineer would take is to see if the plugs are sparking or that fuel is being pumped and then work back to the cause of any irregularity.

Of course the problem could be totally unrelated to the immobiliser and be a faulty fuel pump or ignition system or just a wire unplugged but most engineers would still go about diagnosing the fault in this way. Alternatives are diagnostic fault code reading systems which an engineer would plug into the vehicle's diagnostic socket with specialist equipment and then be able to check all systems in the vehicle as well as any fault codes that may have been logged. These diagnostic systems can make fault tracing easier.

@T_bandery, Its been up a few times before but got deleted the last time and no-one know how. Think it was deleted by mistake during auto-prune. But yeah I did write it all. I had a old back up copy, but added a lot more since then. A few answers need tweaking, some of the links do as well, and I'll make it multi-lingual again.

If it was a sticky or an annoucement the auto-prune shouldnt touch it so it could of been a slip of someones finger..

Where is the poll option for 'Put this at the top of the damn home page'

That way there wouldnt even be need for auto-prune because we would see a big drop in the amount of repeated questions posted
