But if the air is coming through the pipe before going to the engine bay would this not mean the problem is in the pipes before it reaches the engine?

It gets into the system thruogh the returnd line... which is the pipe you have indicated

Finally got this sorted. Left it into a mechanic that found the problem lay with the little plastic connector that connects to the left hand side of the filter housing. Took this off and replaced with a new hose and jubilee clips thanks for the all the help people!
