A while back I mentioned I had problems with my alternator belt. Well I had a look at it and now so has a gargae and we have both come back with the same diagnostic and that it's either the alternator or the power steering pump. Tensioners are fine but how can I distinguish which one is the problem? Both freewheels spin freely and don't give any sign of any issues. Don't really know where to go from here really.

Spray WD40, or the like, on the alternator. If it goes quite, that could be your culprit.

I've tried to spray both of the freewheels as best I can but that's not made any difference to the sound. Don't really want to douse the alternator completely in WD40 as I don't want to saturate the brushes

i got a short belt from an old car (or they used to sell short universal, strechy ones in my local motor factors) so i could remove the power steering pump or alternator off the belt to work out what one it was on an old car i had once.

Didn't think of that. Will get myself a shorter belt and try it. Thanks

usually the sound on the alt. belt is caused by the 2 pulleys that make the belt cycle, they get worn out because of dirt and water.
if not these 2,then maybe your alten. itself make the noise.
