180 would bolt in but you would need the whole loom ,dash loom, clocks , bsi, ecu and the ecu would need unlocking unless the you get the key and reader around the ignition
the 180 is FLY BY WIRE throttle so you would also need the pedal box and also the gearbox is cable operated so all the linkages would need changing
mi16 has been done before on here be a member who put a t16 engine in (turbo mi16 engine) so its not impossible
what year is your car if its multiplexed it will be harder to put the mi16 engine
alot of people will say just buy a gti or 180 but if your wanting a good project go for it

About £1000 to do it properly, if you did most of the work yourself.

Ecosse do the GTi conversion for £800 and GTi 180 conversion for £1000 exc. parts
It aint a simple job mate, you really need to know what you are doing.....How about buying a really cheap 206 for £300 pound, take all the looms, engine, subframe and gearbox out then try and put everything back in and get it running, if you are successful at that then go ahead with a conversion

A 1.6 engine is never going to be as big on torque as a 2 litre though and it's that which makes the car shoot off down the road...

true.
but unless he got massive amount of buget.
1.6 block with cam and ITB would beat the stock 180

But not on torque. Might match it on BHP but would be much peakier.
