Hi, does anyone have an idea what could be wrong with my 2002 1.1 206.
The temperature gauge will stay at 70 or lower for a long time and then suddenly go into the red and the stop sign will come on. It has happened a month ago, took it to the dealer, they changed the coolant temp sensor as that's what the computer said was broken.
Took it out for a longer drive again this weekend and the problem is still there. Only this time it would suddenly go up, but before I could find a safe place to stop, it came down again and the stop light stopped. On the way back home, same thing happened again, but the light stayed on and temp stayed in the red again.
Could it be a loose contact in the wire, bad earth connection?
The dealer also changed the battery in December.

I would say your thermostat is broken.
Cost about £10 from eurocar parts.
So worth replacing.
The pipe on thr top of the rad goes to thr engine and has a clip on it. The thermostat is that you can unbolt it with 10mm spanner then release the clip to pull it off.

I think its a false indication and your coolant temp. is normal .did they replace the coolant temperature gauge Sensor with a blue connector?if so check wiring from its plug for some loose connections.

I agree that it is a false reading. It has been replaced with a sensor with blue or green connector. Can't remember. Will have a look tonight. I find the temp indication at 70 or below a bit low as well. Don't know if that has anything to do with it.
I will have a look at the connector tonight.

Would that be an easy job? I am in no way a mechanic. I did manage to replace the com unit on my car myself. Would it be similar in difficulty? I'll have a look in the haynes manual to see if it mentioned in there. Would love to sort it as then I can sell it.

Its a 10 min job max really really easy.. And since its a cheap part its allways worth it anyway.

If fan kicks in as usual i think thermostat is ok.

If fan kicks in, the temp sensor is ok, the thermostat can only be checked by looking at it. Dont know why the thermostat would cause the temp to shoot up and down though. Does the temp come down when driving? Does it climb up when stationary? Does the fan kick in?

Well the thermostat lets wather through so if teh valve is didgy it may not open at teh right temp ets so shoots up then shoots down when it opens..

me too doing mine tomoz i thought engine was going to bake at traffic lights ...90c then shot to red,, fan didnt kick in till got home !!! weird but i think it needs some wd40 on to help it move feels stiff

Does the fan kick in? | There are two temp. sensors one tells (the ecu)the fan to operate(usually at 90) other one moves the pointer.

Might even be a water pump fault, is your top and bottom radiator hoses hot?

does your heater still work well, or has it gone s**t since temp probably. if so its the thermostat not opening properly,
well thats what happened to my 306 im guessing its all same principle
