My wife has a 2004 206 1.4hdi. Over some time now it has developed a bad rattling noise. It seems to be coming from the auxiliry belt area. The tensioner is bouncing about quite a lot. When you drive the car and accelerate it is very loud, but when you dip the clutch it seems to go. It also make the noise on tickover. Can anyone suggest where to start looking or known faults. Thanks.

Sounds like the clutch release bearing to me.

Maybe the pullys i guess but it does sound like the release bearing, i had mine done last year and it sounds like what you described.
Hope you get it sorted.

My guess is crankshaft pullley if its same as a 406 pulley.
Look at crankshaft pulley and see if its wobbling when running and or covered in rusty looking brownish deposits/dust..if so its probably about to fall apart!

did you resolve this issue? i have the exact same problem on the same car.
i have replaced the bottom pulley, aux belt and tensioner but still i get a horrible drone about 900rpm. for testing purposes, i'm thinking of getting a shorter belt to eliminate the AC pulley as there appears to be a bit of vibration in the section between the crankshaft and AC pulleys.

quick update for future reference...
on my 1.4hdi, i've resolved the issue of the bouncing tensioner pulley, and horrid noise on idle/low revs.
i changed the alternator for a brand new one and the noise/vibration has completely stopped. incidentally, the new alt. pulley is a clutch type whereas the old one was a solid pulley.
fairly expensive fix considering the crank pulley, tensioner and belt had also just been replaced to no avail.
the old pulley moves freely and is still rigid so don't ask my why it's at fault, must be an internal bearing.
seems very common on the hdi engines, so if a new crankshaft pulley doesn't solve it then look at the alternator pulley.

The 'free-wheeling' alternator pulley is available as a single replacement part, no need to replace the whole alternator.

i did look into that but couldn't find a part number on service box for my original valeo alternator.
even if i did, by the time i could have bought the pulley, found out it may have been the alternator bearing and not pulley causing the vibration, and then factored in what surcharge/sale i can get for my old one - it wasn't that much more overall and i got a brand new alternator for it.
