First of all on Tuesday I had this issue Timing Belt Thread
Then about 2 hours after the mechanic goes I get the EML light come on and it reads as P0170 Fuel Trim Malfunction (Bank 1).
When reving and driving its fine but idle is at about 1,000rpm and when releasing foot from accelerator it will jump down to 750rpm then step back upto 1,000rpm in 3 short seperate movements, also the backlight fo the clock is dimming as the engine idles rough.
Any Ideas ???

the light dimming sounds like alternator sort of thing 
does it turn over fine?

The car runs fine, its has been driving for the past 2 - 3 days perfect apart from a roughish idle and this P0170 code that keeps coming up keeping the EML on.

This code often crops up with incorrect fuel mixture so likely causes could many IE air leak, sensor fault, seroiusly blocked air filter, MAF fault.
basically it needs a full check with live read outs to see exactly whats causing it, maybe even an emissions test would shed more light but if you say performance isn't down then it could just be a sensor fault
the bank 1 part usually points to a RICH mixture so the car has compensated as much as it can and now has thrown the fault code. you need to look at the Long term fuel trim or LTFT on a scanner and it should be 0 or -1% that is fine, if its say 7% either side of 0 then its way off as close to 0 as possible is normal running.
