Replacing wisbone, pain in the ass! Help needed!

There's knocking noise on my suspension, so i order 2 new wishbone to replace it myself with haynes guide bok as reference.

I start with diver's side, everthing went smoothly, just a bit of pain trying to push back the ball joint on the new wishbone to the hub, but it is done at the end. However, when doing the passenger side, the F**king drive shaft just pop out from the gear box and there's gearbox oil everyway. Been struggle to insert the new wishbone and have to abandone the job because of the cold weather (stay too long outside).

Just wonder if anyone got any better idea or procedure to do this better. I know that is better to have to person on this but i am working alone since my girl friend can't give me much help. Any help from will be appreciated, Cheers!

Update!

Both wishbones been replace thz to advices from some of u guys. However, the loud knocking noise still can be heard when i took it out for a test drive. Both droplinks been replaced 4 months ago and now i got new wishbones. Anyone got any idea what to look at next to fix this? Cheers!

Which stage are you at? Is the passenger side wishbone bolted on to the subframe yet?

hahaha the gearbox oil on the drive is always a pain in the ass done it so many times! just have to persist put the wishbone on the chassis first and then the balljoint on 2nd, the easiest way to get it into the hub is with a trolly jack and make sure u tap it straight with a hammer then jack slowly and gently to it pops in

Only manage to insert the bolt for the front bush, because the hub is blocking the way so is hard for me to put the rear bush into position. Whenever i try to jack up the hub, the damm thing move and there will be more gearbox oil coming out. Do i need to tie up the hub to the frame so it won't move? How many litter of oil i need if i need to top up the gearbox oil?

Really regret to start up the job during these cold times, shoul have wait till it get warmer.

So you're still struggling to get the wishbone in place? They can be difficult but you just need to make sure the thing goes in perfectly straight then the bushes don't get jammed within the subframe.
2001 GTi 138, Bilstein Sprint dampers, H&R springs, 21mm Peugeot Sport torsion bars, 22mm rear ARB, Peugeot Sport Group A wishbones, 283mm discs, Goodridge stainless hoses, Maniflow 304 grade 4-2-1 2.5" manifold and system, 200 cell cat, Richard Longman head, 45mm Jenvey throttle bodies, 9.5mm TB spacers, 90mm air horns, Jenvey throttle linkage, Jenvey fuel rail, Aeromotive and Goodridge fuel fittings and braided hose, ITG sausage filter, Radtec custom radiator, Piper Ultimate Road cams, Piper vernier pulleys, Omex 600 ECU. Saxo electric PAS pump, Vibra Technics engine mounts. Samco coolant hoses, TTV steel flywheel, 4.76 final drive ratio, 307 CC 180 ratios. 2019 BMW 530i. 2017 Mercedes C300 convertible.

Mine needed doing 3 months ago. I just got the garage to do it. I was lucky I found a garage that chagred me only £50.00 a side. So I paid £100.00 for 2 new wishbones to be fitted. I bought the wishbones for £75.00 each new from a cool site oin the internet.
Save ya energy and don't get cold, get a garage to do em.

 


My current car is a Mettalic Silver 206 GTi 2.0ltr 16v with Panoramic Sunroof. I love my GTi...

Too late, already fitted the driver side, wishbone on passenger side been removed and now trying to fit in a new one. HAving problmem installing new one cause of the popping out gear box problem. Just wonder if there are any one here which got any bright ideas to install it in a better way. Cheers!

I found it easiest to unbolt the sub frame and drop it down on the passenger side to enable easier access for the ball joint. Either way, the shaft will come out at some point.

Did you buy decent wishbones. If you've got cheap ones they will wear a lot quicker. Andrew Page sell oe quality QH ones for £49 each.

Don't know if this will be any help but if you can turn the hub on full left lock it opens up some space to get the arm located abit easier so you dont risk pulling the shaft out of the box, just be careful when turning the hub not to pop it out Smile

Also by pulling the hub towards you or pushing away can help things as its the balljoint that causes grief when trying to move the arm into position

4-5 hours, i ache all over. bloody pugs, well least passenger side is done, and yes oil everywhere lol.
if anyone is gonna do there's, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A LONG LEVER, some passing by mechanic took pity on me, and got his lever out the van to help me out.
ball joint didnt wanna come out, and i was using a pack hammer lol

After a 2 hours of hardwork, finally manage to replace the passenger side wishbone. Really a pain in the ass job to do it, but at least i got the idea how to it.

However, the knockinng sound still can be hear when driving the car. Make no difference even i replace the wishbones Sad . Anyone here got any idea what might cause the knocking sound? Cheers!

make sure you don't over tightening it Confused

pretty sure the topmount nuts is nylon nuts, shouldn't get loosen itself Confused
