Hi all ive got a quick question, ive just replaced my head gasket and since started it up and it has a misfire. I should also stay that this misfire developed couple days before i noticed the head gasket had failed. But since changing the head gasket it has got worse.

I know that the normal route to take is to change the plugs and the coil pack. Ive changed the plugs and i am planning to change the coil pack. Im just hoping that if i get any fault codes read it will confirm that the coil pack is the culprit.

My question is if there are any fault with the coil pack would this create a fault code, also would the EML be displayed if there are fault codes in the system?

Thanks in advance for any advice and help.

Soory to hijack your thread but just to add to your question .... how do you read fault codes stored?
206 GTI, Ram air filter, lowered 35mm front, 50mm rear, Scorpion 3.5" Back box, phase 2 boot strip, m3 rear lights.. Not much more i want to do, just sorting the paint work out!

EML will come on if there are fault codes stored. I've seen it bring up misfire detected, but this doesn't necessarily mean it's the coil pack at fault. Have you tried a compression test to make sure that all is well in the chambers?

Mutilate: to read fault codes you'll need access to a diagnostic scanner. Have a look on ebay, you can get basic hand held ones or you can get some that plug into your laptop and give you readings and figures etc £20-£30 is a good guide price. I think the 206 uses KWP2000 protocol.

It's heard of that the EML will show but it didn't for me and the coilpack was the only problem.

Will it always light up when fault codes are stored, at the moment it isnt lit im hoping checking for any codes could narrow the search for the problem down. I havnt done a compression test since replacing the head gasket but did one before and couldnt see and differences between the different cylinders.

in my case previously it was a dodgy injector (again no codes (garage diag reader) / no eml). ended up replacing 3 of the 4 because they all slowly failed.

i didnt have access to my own personal diag equipment at the time so i let it get cold, put some cold water on the exhaust manifold where it branches from 4 to 1, started it quickly and ran back round the front to see which of the 4 took longest to evaporate and that gave me my dodgy cylinder. Swapped injectors about, re tried the water trick and the bad cylinder had switched places.

Id try that because its cost free, but it really depends on how much time you have to mess about with this stuff

Well i had it checked for fault codes today and the only codes that were pressent were from me plugging/unplugging sensors to check for change etc.

Thanks i might try that, i think im going to bite the bullet and buy a new coil pack and hope that fixes it, if not i can always sell the coil pack on to get as much of the money back as possible then try and find the fault.

Remove the coil pack & check its a genuine Bouricord coil.

Check the spark plugs, NGK = throw them in the bin ASAP & replace with Bosch Super Plus.

Check the coil pack connector plug for the suppressor mod on pin 4.

Peugeot / Citroen part number 6555 K9 Suppressor if it hasn't already been fitted

Its a sagem coil pack which i know is well known for having a dicky fit. So will probably just bite the bullet and buy a new coil pack. Out of interest what are Valeo coil packs like?

The spark plugs were NGK and had been in for a year without problems, but have changed to bosch super 4's yesterday.

Will have to check for suppressor mod, is it an obvious mod?

Its a small supressor connected to the wire on pin 4 of the coil pack connector plug & the other end of the supressor is earthed on to the engine / chassis.

£5.29 for the part from any Peugeot / Citroen main dealer.

Just to help you out matey, you can get a coil pack from scrappy from a 206 or a saxo so that will be cheaper and most places let you try before you buy which can save money and if it doesnt solve problem then dont buy

Glad to hear its back together though anyway

Cheers mate normally i would do that or borrow one for 2 minutes but at the moment its undriveable because of the misfire, Hopefully picking up a new coil pack in the morning though at trade price from a local parts store. Working in a garage with colleagues with trade accounts does have its benefits Laughing

Hopefully then it should be back to running normal. But no doubt there will be another surprise waiting for me Evil or Very Mad
