As the title says. only when cold, white smoke. Engine has done less than 50k
What could it be other than piston rings and if it is piston rings how long will it last?

Very good. I Knew they did smoke when cold but I have plumes coming out of mine. My mate did say piston rings to be and i did start to worry

there is a MASSIVE difference between smoke and steam.
if there is white steam vapour coming out of the engine this is NOT piston rings haha. IF there is something wrong it will most likely be the head gasket letting coolant into the cylinder, where it is changed to steam.
as said before though in this kind of weather its normal to get quite a bit of steam out of the exhaust when you start up because of condensation due to a cold exhaust etc. if you are still getting this after a long journey once everything has warmed up then it may point to a gone head gasket. but you will see other evidence of this such as mayo on the dipstick, coolant loss, oil in the coolant, pressurised coolant etc.
when piston rings are gone they let oil into the combustion chamber. if you have bad rings (which I vry much doubt at 50k lol) the smoke will be thicker, and have a blueish grey tint to it. it will be constant when the engine is hot and cold. and it won’t be clear and white like steam.
if for some reason you can’t tell the difference between smoke and steam just put your hand close to the exhaust for a few seconds when the cars running. if you hand gets wet. its steam.
sounds like your mate doesnt know what hes on about to be fair its pretty noobish to assume a car has bad piston rings because it steams when cold ![Laughing Laughing](images/smiles/icon_lol.gif)
