just check the rear brake pad, on one side, for example rear passenger side, one of the pad wear a lot more than the other. and the same applies to the rear driver side as well.
surely that isn't normal? what would be the cause?

i'd check the slider's are free & clean / lube the caliper up correctly first.
Unless you really know what your doing leave the brakes well alone.
