The crease could be the cause tbh, there pretty brittle with age and even a crease can cause them to no longer work, can you not source a new part inc a ribbon and replace the creased one?
IIRC they're soldered onto the board, but aslong as your half decent with a solder iron it's a simple enough job
Failing that, if you cant fix it get a new one and I'll have to come to a meet in Peterborough some time and solder it for you lols

If its only the mileage counter (odometer) that isnt working then dont worry about fixing it for the mot as its not an mot test item.

My ribbon broke, I changed the dials over and the guy said I needed to have a milage to record so I had to put in salvaged clocks so my MOT certificate says 76 thou instead of 43. I need to find some one who could help my repair it, I can find new clocks at the scrappy all day long, just no idea how to repair it

does it matter if the mileage is lower than the last recorded mileage? If not, then i can just get a crappy set to put in for the MOT, as i dont fancy re-glueing my plasma dials.

Yes, its recorded on the mot certificate but it's of no concern to the mot tester, or the authorities if its the exact same mileage recorded at every mot!
