anyone in the south wales area-ish got a tow bar they'd like to hire to me =D just bought a 206 with a nakered gearbox from surrey n dont really want to go hiring a trailer........c'mon people show me the tow bars =D

I got tow'd 100miles with just a rope

How bad is the gearbox? The diff and some of the shafts will still rotate from the road wheels moving. You might be better off getting a trailer or at least a front end lift.
If you are in recovery service, with any vehicle cover, ring them and say you've broken down. They will recover the car free of charge for you.

As far as I am aware, but will stand corrected, there is no law regarding towing with a rope on a motorway apart from keeping out of the outside lane and obeying a 60mph speed limit. You get onto sticky ground if the rope snaps or it is not upto standard.
Regulation 86 of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 states that a vehicle (which is legally classed as a trailer when under tow) may be towed by rope or chain which must be less than 4.5 metres in length and if in excess of 1.5m the rope or chain must be made "clearly visible to any other person using the road within a reasonable distance from either side".
As the vehicle becomes in theory becomes a trailer, then the person doing the towing must hold the appropriate licence for a trailer of that weight. Also the towed vehicle would have to have a trailer board attached to the rear and wired to the towing vehicles electrical system.
If the engine on the towed vehicle is running (which I would highly recommend to assist with braking) then that vehicle would then have to abide by the road traffic laws and have insurance, MOT and road tax and be under the control of a competant, qualified driver.
Hire a trailer. Be far easier.

if you class towing a car as classing a trailer then you cant do more that 55mph on a motorway/duel carriageway..
