Okay I finally brought a set of lockwood dial and have fitted them with the help from the Haynes max power book but the problem is when I fit the cluster into the car them temp and fuel gauge shoots up off the gauge!! Can someone help me please

Could be 1 of 2 things:

Either you must have span the dial to many times when removing them

Or

You simply put them back in the wrong place e.g putting the fuel needle on full when in fact the tank is empty.

The first one will result in new cluster, the second problem just means you'll need to put the needle back in the right place

How do I correct it then? The cluster wasn't on the car when I put the new backing in.

Well did you make a note of how much fuel you had in the car before removing the dials. The Stuff you should have noted was:

Idling position for revs
fuel level
oil temp when idling (if you have oil temp)
Engine temp (usually around 90)

To fix it you have to pull the needles off and put them back in the right place

make sure they are pushed in all the way. I got this because I didn't put them on tight enough

They are pushed all the way in but I'm really stuck on how to fix it with out getting another set of dials
