It's one thing ramming the gear into 1st at moving speed.
It's another gently pushing it until it pops itself-in smoothly, at upto 2-3mph.
It's totaly another when it blatantly refuses unless you are completely stationary at 0.0mph.
There are situations (unknown uphill, truck infront slowing down etc) where its possible to get rear-ended.
My conclusion is that the synchromesh in first can wear-down because the newer 206 we got recently
(same gearbox, same engine) is perfect in this respect without having to force anything.

Peugeot gearboxes are rubbish at the end of the day...
To simply get around this problem, if and when you attempt to put it into first, when rolling or stationary, simply put it in neutral, let go of the clutch, and try again! Make sure you match the appropriate revs though!
Should be fine!

There where designed back in the 1980's.
Its more down to operator error then the gearbox design, having driven countless different PSA Peugeot / Citroen products over 15+ years both with MA & BE gearboxes ive never found a problem with either type of manual gearbox.

Its fine apart from some synchros being totaled from people ramming-it in.
This then means you have NO-synchro in 1st no matter what.

Thats down to 100% operator error.
A bad workman always blames his tools
Ive lost count of all the different PSA cars / vans ive driven over the years, never had a problem with a gearbox.

Agreed.
Driven loads of pugs/citroens too.
However when I got my 206 second hand it soon became evident just how
bad a workman the previous owner was with the gearbox.

Drove a 04 Mondeo one day last week due to needing a bigger boot then the 206 has, gearchange, clutch & steering are so much lighter then a 206.
Gearchange is a lot shorter & much more precise to, clutch is hydraulic so that was nice & light but sod all feel to it.
It was a bit of a shock going from the Mondeo & getting back in to my 206 later in the day

I could do with that right now due to severe left-knee problem.

Ive never had a problem with my gearbox!! And all the ragging ive done in the last 30k miles!!!
Im just saying compared to other gearboxes they are rubbish!
I never know they were designed in the 80's,
shame they dont make a newer version of the 206 with modern technology / engines!!
then you would be able to get better fuel economy and go faster at the same time!
I only want this because I like the 206 shape! nevermind though!

Learn to drive CORRECTLY |
I have always used gear 1 at very slow speed because with my fiesta the car will juddle and eventually stall if I drive too slow on gear 2... I am use to this way of driving. I can just feel the same happening for peugeot when driving up hill in slow traffic. If not, then I'm wrong

You shouldnt be trying to select 1st gear while the car is moving.
