Hi,

Long story short, I slid into a kerb in the snow at Christmas. Bent the sub axle at the rear and snapped the track rod (thankfully I had crap wheels on). The stub axle was replaced + bent break disc at the rear. Front track rod was replaced. Both driver side. I moved to Norway and didn't drive the car for 6months (It has been driven at least once a week). Now I've brought it over hear and found two odd noises, both on the driver side.

Front:
There is a creaking noise coming from the steering. I turn the when and when it gets towards half a turn, the noise starts. It sounds like it is straining. A dull creak.

Back:
There is a low squeaking / creaking (higher pitched than the front) and only noticeable at low speeds. I've read on the forum and there is lots of mentions about top mounts / links.

Car maintenance over here is outlandishly expensive so I'd like to try fix it myself.

Any ideas.

Front: Probably the droplinks/anti-roll bar links.
Back: Rear axle (possibly)

How can you check if it is droplinks?

What might be up with the axel? Could it be a shock absorber... kinda sound like it make the noise when the suspension compresses (arb)

Thanks

No.. Just check for sign of wear? Are they visible?

i have a similar problem on my golf and will be fixing it soon. it's more noticeable on a warm day as the bush has dried out and it makes an awful creaking at low rolling speed. in my case i got down the side of the car while a mate turned the wheel and i could pinpoint the noise to the bush.

yeh you could give them a visual check for cracks etc.

just out of interest, whereabouts in norway do you live?

Do you know anywhere that stocks parts for the Gti 180 and is willing to post over?

If the front creaks when steering it suggests problems with the ball joint or top mount bearings. Drop links don't move very much and so tend to only become a problem when riding over bumps.
