Was just wondering what sort of things you can do to a diesel engine... Air filters, chips etc...

Unless its a turbo diesel not too much, if it is - Remap, intercool it if it hasnt got one of those...

1.9D's are too much of a 'mechanical' engine. Very hard to tune. Just enjoy the car until you have the money to upgrade.

If it's a 1.9, then nothing! Buy a nice panel filter to make it breath better but don't spend any more than that!

Haha macj that's a bit harsh, my first car was a 1.9 diesel, even a 1.2 petrol is a better and more responsive, the only thing going for the diesel engine is fuel economy mate, other than that the best advice I can give u is get your first years no claims and sell up and buy something else that's what I did

The general advice tends to be just keep the engine serviced, but you can still make it handle better
