i have just been with a friend who owns a golf deisel and the exhaust light has just come on any ideas what it means

It's a build up of soot in the ceramic filter's in the exhaust, Try and take it for a good run on the motorway to clear it out.

It's telling you that the diesel particulate filter is clogged and needs renewing, warning, mega bucks.

Just take it down the lanes and give it some boot to clear it out.
If it needs changing or the Eolys fluid topping up, then might be time to get the DPF removed.
