I'm looking for some help with a problem just developed on my car.

Jumped in after a few days away, and I have no speedo.

When the key is first turned, the needle does it's usual jump up to its zero position, and it feels solidly attached, so I don't think a loose needle is the problem.

The mileage is not being counted either. With the door open I no longer get a warning flash/beep when moving.

Unsure of whether the speedo is linked to the ABS speed sensors on the wheels, but I have no ABS warning light on, and the ABS system is still working.

I've searched and found nothing helpful so far. At a bit of a loss as to what to do next, so any help would be appreciated.

To start with, anyone confirming 100% what feeds the speedo/odo readings would be useful, as I can't seem to find a definite answer to that either.

Thanks.

Speed sensor on the gearbox

OR

Broken wire at the multiplug behind the passenger front wheel.

Could also be a stripped speedo drive in the gearbox but pretty rare.

Pop the speed sensor of the gearbox & use a drill to spin it up to see if the speedo now works.

Ah, so the speedo/odo is driven from a mechanical drive in the gearbox then? Is it the later models which use an ABS sensor to provide the speedo readings?

Correct.

Mechanical driven speed sensor on yours that sends an electronic signal to the instrument cluster.

Wiring multiplug behind passenger front wheel plastic arch liner is also worth a look, wires have been known to fail there.

Well after removing the air filter housing, battery, and battery tray, I still couldn't get to where I think the sensor is. Only place I can see a sensor on the gearbox.

What have I missed? Or is it always an awkward job to get to and you just have to work around it. I couldn't see a way of getting anything close to it.

I gae up on mine just bought a radar speed detector instead for like 30 quid more accurate than the speedo anyway and they can't fail ure MOT for it. I reckon mines like ures a loose wire as it was working for a bit now cut off completely but i can't be arsed to trace the wires all the way back !!

Mine was a dodgy wire at the big connector. Speed sensor isn't difficult to change.

Mine is not the same as the one in the pic there, unless that is a pic of something different. The sensor was a b*****d of a thing to get to as well, buried properly out the way.

Tried a confirmed working speedo head as well tonight, but still no joy.

I have a GPS detector giving me speed, but I'm more worried about the mileage not counting. Are there any issues with MOT or insurance if your mileage isn't updating?

Not sure what else it could be, could be a wire but the wires from the plug looked OK. Is it fused? I guess it would be a small current so linked in with other things, but don't seem to have lost anything else.

Apart from that it could be the mechanical drive in the gearbox I suppose, but I bet that is a hell of a thing to change as well.
