I had this light come up. Im sure when i started the car earlier i heard a loud pop or it might have been one of the baloons outside halfords popping in the sun.
When reversing i can smell a slight fuel smell. The car doesnt seem to be using any more petrol than usual.

Year of 206 & engine size / type?
Might be worth checking the EGR valves pipework & wiring is ok before throwing a new one on.

its a 1.1 2003, i didnt think petrol had EGR ??
Before this the car had a few issues with a misfire and had an injector replaced.
There was also an issue whree the cam belt when it changed it had about 5 nothces missing off of it however it was replaced and started fine and has been driving fine for about 3 months.

get the timing checked, wrong timing could cause unburn fuel to be expelled through the exhaust..

Ok guys will give mech a call will give you an update when I find out more. The cam belt was only done a few months ago and I watched him do it he used the holes on both side of the engine and put pins in them. He also asked me to hold a screwdriver in one of them on the passenger side while he turned a pulley. Then the screwdriver dropped a bit as if it lined something up. Does this sound right ?

I have since found this thread (http://www.206info.co.uk/Forums/viewtopic/t=33102/highlight=p0402.html).
1, Could my cat be knackered.
I do a lot of motorway driving and do use the full range of revs. not someone to change gear everywhere at 2,000 rves.
2, I can hear a slight blowing from the exhaust from under the drivers side when opening the door and reving it a bit. but only very slightly when pulling off. Could this be the cause?
3, Could it be the EGR needs cleaning, if so how do i do this? Anyone have a photo to highlight where it is on a 1.1?

Looked in my Haynes Manual but it's only '98 - '01 and pre EGR for the petrol engine.
