hey guys,
been out fixing my fan as the relays and wiring had corroded, got some new relays and cleaned the wiring and hey presto the air con works the fan and the fan starts for the cooling.
but there are a few issues i think...
the fan does not kick in to kool the engine untill the temp reaches around 93degrees... this seems very high for the fan to kick in!! it goes on for roughly 10 seconds then turns off, dropping the temp to around 86 degree's.
surely it should stay on longer than that?? normal driving engine temps are around the 70 degree mark....?
the most alarming issue is that when behind the wheel, as the fan kicks in the engine managment light flashes up then back off, just like flickers breifly, i let the fan kick in 5 times and this happend every time... seems abit strange...
any advice would be good,
thanks guys.

That is normal for the fan to kick in at that temperature as that is the Stage 2 Cooling cycle.
Has the EML only come on since you have messed about with the fan?

well the fan has never worked since owning the car and no the EML has never once came on.
it doesnt come one and stay on it just flickers at the same time that the fan first kicks in....
and what do you meen by the "stage 2" cooling cycle? where was the stage 1 cooling cycle as thats the only time it came on lol

Is the fan loud when it switches on? If it is then that's the high speed fan. 93 degrees doesn't sound too high for it to come on. The low speed fan i.e. the air con fan speed is fairly quiet.

yea the fan is rather loud when it comes on.
it came on today in traffic and again the EML flashed up and it felt like the ca was about to stall for half a second.
it cooled it to around 88degrees then stopped and it didnt take long to get back to 93ish.
only reason im saying it seems high is that when drving it sits at around 79, so thogh it would kick in before 93!, also when i was doing this on the driveway i noticed some coolant was leaking out the filler cap and runing down the bottle onto the floor.... boiling over maybe?? and boy it smells hot!!

Apart from 2 relays, you also have a resister for the fan. located at the bottom below the relays.(1 bolt in housing)
This operates 1st and 2nd stage cooling cycles. my resistors f------d at the mo and is working only on the 2nd cycle, fan coming on at 93
and mainly constant at 87 which is normal (no air con either that works on 1 stage cycle)

Your air conditioning will work when on the move. If it doesn't then it's not the fan at fault.

I Thought resisters were only fitted to cars with air con(am i wrong)

yep the aircon works perfectly fine, the fan comes on for it then goes off, then repeats after a little while.
but i tend not to have the aircon on much to save fuel.
i did undo this bolt and have a look at it, looks like a small coil spring with the resister at the top, was canny corroded so give it a little clean up.
what exactly does this do??
all this cycle stuff is confusing me. should my fan kick in to cool the engine before it is doing so now??

The resistor in the picture below just reduces the current to the fan making it spin slower (the low speed fan) than if a high current (high speed fan) was fed into it.

ok get it now.
so is there only one speed for cooling? which would be fast at 93deg?
then slow for the aircon ?
was just concerning to see coolant bulbing threw the coolant filler cap when the engine is at 93ish deg..

My EML light come on out of the blue, hot day going slow(traffic jam) motorway, temprature gauge went sky high.
crawled to garage and found fan motor burnt out and seized fan.
Have a diagnostics done to be on the safe side.

Guys i've had my car about a week now and yesterday i was driving and the red stop light started flashing on the dash it was at about 93 degrees so just as the fan should kick in? I thought about it and realised the A/C and the fan hasn't worked since i've had it but i thought it just needed re-gassing. Can a fan from any year 206 go on any year? I took it to my dads mate tonight who said that the rad might be from an earlier one and not compatible with a newer car? I thought that was a load of bs tbh. My car is a 52 reg with the later style steering wheel (so multiplexed?) Just to note my car was previously accident damaged so the rad and fan was replaced.
Sorry for hi-jacking your thread but didn't want to make another and yourproblem is similar.

i doubt the radiator is at fault unless its badly damaged, check all the usual pipes and coolant level etc and test the thermostat
