I had driven a diesel car for 2 years, but now having a petrol GTI, things seem different (obviously), but is it just me or when you come off the accelerator, the engine seems to take longer to slow down, hard to explain, but in my diesel, when you came off the gas, the engine stopped running quicker (well, not stopped, but died down, so to speak).
I'm wondering if my throttle cable is stiff or summat, the engine seems to "whirr" for too long when I put the clutch down?
Clutch is relatively new, so I dont think its that?
Any ideas?

All cars act and feel different petrol Or not,
I drove an identical car to mine before.. felt and acted compleatly different

i though is because the higher internal friction due to the longer stroke in diesel?

The simple answer to your question is it's normal. Our 406 Diesel took ages to change revs. Audi goes through them like "that".

A diesel engine provides better engine braking than a petrol, It is a combination of what has been suggested already.
To test your throttle cable is ok you can do a static test. Raise your revs in neutral to 4000 rpm and fully release the throttle pedal. The needle should drop back to idle within 3 seconds

It also has a much higher compression ratio.
