My mates V reg 206 (The one with no rev dial) is getting pretty dangerous now when he drives it, it'll randomly start revving itself as though someone has just stamped on the throttle and carrier on sounding like its maxing out and stops when it pleases
Any ideas what it might be? there's no warning lights and it just happens randomly,usually after a coupleof minutes driving

mine had this exact problem, took it to multiple garages and was told it was the ECU (they would suggest the most expensive option). ended up changing the ICV and MAP sensor myself and has idled spot on since. MAP sensor is held in with 1 bolt located on the left of the throttle body, ICV is held in with 2 or 3 torx screws on the rear of the throttle body (may be different locations on yours but this is the location on 1.1 and 1.4 8v)

Mine was revving at around 4k at one stage! 
I took it to RST and Paul took it apart and found that it had a burnt out earth resistor causing an open live fault IIRC. Cost me £100 to fix which wasnt too bad

If it revs like mad I would think that's simply too much air getting into the engine...can't be too hard to find why.

99.99% sure that'll sort your problem, mine had no fault codes either. only other sensor would be the throttle position sensor but its unlikely. both ICV and MAP sensor should cost less than £40 all together and about half an hour absolute MAXIMUM to change them

ahh well i willtake themoff forhim and give them a ruddy good clean, if that doesnt help willreplace themand check for broken wires etc whats the best way to clean the sensors?

get some carb cleaner on the ICV, but be careful with the MAP sensor they're easy to break if your heavy handed lol

my mates 57 plate renault clio campus had this problem, dealership replaced the throttle pos sensor did the trick

MAP sensor i would think. Had similar problem on another car. It used to run fine, then it would bog down for a scond then rev like mad.

Have changed the icv which was in a bad way and still does it, went to change the map sensor too but surprise surprise ECP sent the wrong one!! it fit but has a 4 pin connector instead of the required 3 pin, thats doesnt look too clever either so will be changing that today
the throttle position sensor is another possibility as a went for a drive in it and you only have to tap teh throttle ever so slightly and its as if you stamped on it! im only talking about just nudging it lol :/ will have to wait and see!
