I was at Bluewater and unlocked my car with the key fob, worked first time. then i got home and now it wont lock using the fob. has it run out of battery or something?

Is that a question or an observation?
We might even have to guess what sort of key fob it is. My mind reading skills aren't on form tonight.

first put the key in the ignition and turn one click ad hold both the lock and unlock button for about 10 seconds,then try to see if it works,if not you might need a new battery

The thing about rocket science is its actually quite simple. Rocket engineering, now thats trickier.

A GTI 180 should give plenty of warning messages on the MFD if the keyfob battery voltage is low.

what you mean what kind of fob... the one thats standard with my car obviously. i thought it was supposed to tell me if it was running out of battery but it hasnt. how do i get a new one?

Battery OR fob?
CR2016 battery & resync the fob.
I only managed nearly 8 years from my original keyfob battery

well my cars 2004 so if it is the battery then it wouldv lasted about the same. its working fine again today though. no idea whats wrong with it.
