Hi, I've searched around and see this is a really common fault, perhaps caused by failed injectors. Symptoms of mine are intermittently (once/twice a week or so) firing on about 2 1/2 cylinders upon a cold start and also after a motorway blast it will flag the two faults and drop to 2 or 3 cylinders and zero power. Switching off the ignition seems to fix the problem for a bit but then it can come back either within minutes or a day or two later.

About six months ago it went into a reputable/recommended garage for a cambelt replacement and service (was all working fine before this) and whilst there and the work completed they rang to say did I know it was only firing on 3 cylinders.. they then attempted to fix it (three times now) and I think (Spanish garage so not 100% sure) they replaced something to do with the fuel rail and a crank position sensor. It looks like they have diagnostics so with that should they be able to narrow it down or are the fault codes vague?

Are there a sequence of things to look at to get to the bottom of this?

Has it got the correct oil in it?

Hydraulic tappets are a known issue.

As far as I know it´s the correct oil

Seems like there are a load of known issues for this issue, is there any way of checking which of them it might be before replacing everything?

Also unsure how tappets or the oil would cause an intermittent fault? It can go for days and be perfectly fine with no symptoms at all, surely this is more likely to be caused by something electrical?

See if you can get the fault codes and post them on here.

Could be any number of things but that will at least narrow it down.

Cheers MrBSI sounds a likely fault but not sure if in this instance, for example when the thing is limping along with 2 cylinders at 120kph and I turn the ignition on and off quickly the fault tends to goes away. I would imagine something mechanical would linger a bit perhaps?

Not firing on two cylinders intermittently sounds more like a coil pack/plugs. But did the car run absolutely fine when you picked it up after the cambelt change? It won't be the first time someone's messed that up
Clues would be uneven idle and even throwing a fault code at speed
What are the actual fault codes stored?

It was running absolutely fine when it went it for the 60K service & cambelt change, whilst there (after they had done everything required) they rang to ask me about it running poorly. They kept it for another couple of weeks while they replaced a sensor and something to do with the fuel pressure rail (I think), when I got it back it was fine for a week or so and then started the intermittent lumpy running routine. Again though surely if it was a timing problem it wouldn't be intermittent? It can run absolutely fine for days on end, will start from cold and idle fine and blast along the motorway without issue. Another day you can start it from cold and it will run like a bag of nails. The faults got cleared when they "fixed" it and to be fair it is only recently that it threw the Cat & Antipollution error (happened whilst travelling along a motorway both times) again even though it has been intermittently been running poorly without the display showing anything wrong.

I am going to try and take it back to a garage with diagnostics so I can find out what codes it is showing asap

Went back to garage, annoyingly it has been running 100% fine for the last couple of days. The codes stored though are P0300 & P0341 (I suspect these might be generic codes?). I also checked what they have already done, transpired they have changed the coilpack, cleaned all the injectors & done the crank position sensor on top of the service. I can take it to another garage 45 minutes away that uses Peugeot Planet if needed?

P = powertrain so there engine codes.

P0300 = Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected

P0341 = Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

Little bit more information which may assist..

The camshaft position sensor was replaced, the oil was Repsol 10W/40, the spark plugs had a reference code of 5960F7 (Google suggests this might be Champion, I will physically check this later this week). Any clues there!?

Id be tempted to change the spark plugs & put a set of Bosch Super Plus in.

Has the timing belt been checked for correct fitment since its been replaced?

It hasn't but would incorrect fitment allow it to ever run perfectly at all though?

Update on this as it seems to be fixed (no faults in 6 weeks) and might be useful for others.

Changed plugs for Bosch and cleaned the MAF (just in case)
