I've been a passenger to some manual car drivers who do the same thing Very Happy

Sounds like your dad's car needed some attention, should be smooth as silk. Kick down acceleration should be instant

Yeh I spose. People should just learn to drive a manual and then decide whether to have an automatic car. I think having an auto license really hampers you with car choice

He got shot of it before it got too bad

im guessing though seeing as it was a runabout it was cheap, so could tht be the reason it didnt last ???

You have obviously set your heart on letting her buy a 206 auto so this thread is totally pointless.

Dont come back on here crying when it throws its toys out the pram.

on! have to say that after driving several renault laguna autos, and experiencing a jerky ride and unexpected kicks in the back, i decided to buy a 206 1.4 auto as it was recommended to me, BUT, as i feared, when test driving the car along country lanes in essex, it was smooth as silk and then purchasing and driving it to london and back every day, it really is jerky and ultra sensitive and its throttle has to have a very feathered touch!

Also, it doesnt change up until it reaches 3000rpm, which really is frustrating when in traffic and this also makes it very throttle sensitive and jerky!

This has resulted in a very achey right foot / calf AND i am seriously distressed to read on this forum that the auto box is Renault designed which would explain the similarity in the jerky shifting i experienced in the Laguna....Gutted!
Ii love this car but the auto box really lets it down!

if the box has been recon then it shouldn't go wrong easily.

make sure you only use the correct grade of ATF and retro fit an gearbox oil cooler.

All this to get your missus in a car...... to be honest i think it might be easier to bin her off and get one that can drive a manual!

This 206 IS going on a trackday despite it's every effort to stay at home in the garage!

I'm not sure. My dad had a 206 1.6 petrol auto for a very short period of time. Everytime it changed gear it nearly threw you out of your seat it was that jerky. And downshifts when you try and overtake someone take an absolute age

Saying that, that's something you would pick up on the test drive though.

i have an auto 206.

mines the 1.6 16v tip auto and i like it. i mostly do city driving so its great for that.

and despite what people think, its smooth on the changes (i cant stand being in other peoples cars and getting thrown out my chair every time they change gear)

is nice for long journeys too, is relaxing.

providing the engines a decent size, then autos are fine, and learn to work the throttle to control when it changes too (or use the tip-tronic).

i only have an auto license and it doesnt really both me, i am practising to re take my test though - purely because i want to drive them aston martins im working on ehe. and have plans for an old golf or something as my next car.

but - get a decent engine and the auto box should be fine. my 2 cents

'engineering degree'!! s**t man, we're talking about driving a poxy little car not piloting the bloody space shuttle!

If you think about it, you'd be amazed just how little "piloting" is done on a Space Shuttle. it's almost all done on AUTO and they don't tend to have imminent collision hazards to avoid every 10 seconds like we do on planet earth. They must have a pretty big clutch though Very Happy

When you see Clarkson and Hammond driving like loons in modern power cars, what are they? Autos

When electric cars come in, what will they be? Autos

I love auto wipe, I like not having to mess about with a choke in the mornings, I love remote central locking, I enjoy electric windows, I like power steering and power brakes. I could do it all manually but it would be like going back to the stone age

You can do everything with your feet like Fred Flintstone but a modern auto can change gear quicker and smoother than you ever can and whilst you have your clutch in then you're not accelerating. The auto has already done its smooth shift in less than a second whilst you're still messing about with clutch and gas and is already accelerating away from you. Food for thought Very Happy
