Hi,

Am in the process of changing the CV joint on my 2001 GTI (reluctor ring broken).

I've got all the bolts undone, discs off etc and removed but can't seem to get the lower arm ball joint to seperate from the suspension strut. Any tips on how to do this?

Also, is there anything else I need to do to get to the CV joint?

Anyone know what the torque settings should be when putting it all back together?

I've had a look through the how to section and can't seem to find what I'm after.

Any help appreciated. The car's jacked up and in limbo until I get this sorted now.

Many thanks,

SM

What have you done so far?
If you put the car on axle stands and then jack up on the wheel hub but leaving yourself enough room to withdraw the lower arm then that will compress the suspension strut spring. Then with a long lever bar you should be able to push down on the lower suspension arm to separate it from the hub

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I've nearly got it all done (just can't get the last little bit of the joint to come out, It's well over half way out). I can't seem to get the lower arm to move down anymor regardless of how high I jack up the car on the hub etc.

Scratching heads now!

A longer lever bar or use compressor springs on the strut spring to get that extra room?

Have a look here at someone replacing the lower wishbone

I had the same problem, couldnt split the lower ball joint with a 5ft pry bar! So i got a set of spring compressors and compressed the spring and that allowed me to remove the strut and have enough movement in the hub to remove the drive shaft. Peugeot Lower arms are an absolute nightmare compared to some cars.
