Would a battery being low cause an issue?
Not unless you get a host of other systems going down at the same time

this is really frustrating!
Yes, it will be until you find it, intermittent faults are the worst. I know someone with a 207 that had exactly the same fault, went on for weeks, he changed the ETS twice but it was a simple crushed wire from ETS to ECU just like we'd been telling him all along

The wiring all the way from the ETS to the ECU needs to be checked thoroughly. You've done what you can but sod's law, it's always in the least accessable area. Maybe wait until your electrician gets there and they'll probably do resistance and insulation checks on the wires or maybe run in some new ones

If the gauge skyrockets up and back down again in record time then you know it can't be the coolant as it can't change temp that fast

Thanks for all your help Deckchair, I'll be giving it a thorough check over some time this week again and if I can't find the fault I'll get Mr Electrician out.

How do I test the fan by the way? I don't think it works! and if it's not working then how do I fix it? ;O

this happened to me and the problem was the low speed fan .If you dont think your fan is working then you have probably just answered your own question .The reason the guage goes fron normal to hot and straight back to normal is when the temperature reaches 93 degrees the fan shoul kick in on low speed if it does not the ecu detects a fault and sends the guage up putting the stop light on also.if you have access to a fault code reader with live data run the engine untill it shows the stop light and see what your actual temperature is also see if the fan kicks in.If your car has air con switch it on to see if your fan operates, if not i susspect the corroded wire problem at the relay.s hope this helps

Original post says the gauge temperature goes into the red. It moves suddenly into red and then goes back to normal so that won't be a rad fan problem

You can easily make an ETS simulator with a variable resistor with a range from 0 to 20k ohms. With this you can simulate all engine temperatures and test whether your rad fan turns on at the right temperature without taking your engine to high temps

 

20k variable resistor with wires attached. Just play about with it until you get the feel of how much to turn the variable resistance pot get the resistance range you want. You can buy these at Maplins or online for £1

 

With the resistance set at ambient temperature (use chart below) Then install your simulator in place of the ETS ( pic isn't a Peugeot)

 

Here's a typical temp v resistance chart for an ETS

Of course, if you have Peugeot Planet then you can test the rad fan operation with that

with mine it was a slow speed rad fan problem . mine had Exactly the same symptoms and when i replaced the low speed resistor it goes to 93 degrees but never any higher, so in my case it was a fan problem.

Yes yours was physically overheating above the desired 93C without the rad fan ever coming on. Mykes is just suddenly indicating max temp and just as suddenly returning to normal

It's a 2002, 1.4 and yeah it has A/C. Thanks for that variable resistor thing, I might give that a go, I'm a bit of a dumbo when it comes to electronics Razz Thanks for your post too scousemouse, I'm going to try and see if the fan is working some time this week, going to strip the whole front off and see whats going on Very Happy

if you read my post i had EXACTLY the same problem with the guage going into the red and then witin 10 seconds returning to normal and since no car can go from normal to overheating and return to normal in 10 seconds then it was obvious to me that it was a fan issue so as i said IF your car has air con then providing it has sufficient gas and the compressor works then if you switch the air con on then you should be able to see the fan spin slowly if not check the low speed resistor which can be repaired with a 185 degree thermal fuse which is available from farnell electronics . i have some of the fuses spare if you find you need one you are more than welcome to one

Haha result! The fan isn't working, even after having the A/C on 4 for a few minutes, the fan is stationary. So collectively we've all diagnosed the problem. Nice one Scouse and Deckchair, thanks for your help so far! Very Happy

OK next up is fixing it so it does work O.O scouse where is that resistor and will that make it work at fast speeds too?

the resistor is in the radiator housing you cansee it if you look through the lower grill and you can remove it without removing the bumper from underneath. if you can test it you should have continuity between all 3 pins .also chec if your fan has siezed(common problem) this can blow the resistor. but i would hazzard a guess that you wiring is corroded at the relay's , again mine had this problem but it is easily repaired.

my fan spins freely i think and i don't have anything to check the resistor with Sad so ill have to just hope its the wiring has corroded. so if i take off the cover and see the two relays, if its corroded what do i do lol o_O

all you need to check the resistor is a cheap multimeter aon continuity or beep test to repair the wiring just cut the multi plug from the damaged loom taking note what colour wire goes to each terminal on the relay )they are all numbered ) and just crimp new terminals on to the wires and re attach to the relay .( if you want to pm me a mobile no i will talk you through it )

might pop to Maplins and pick up a multimeter, when I put it on continuity test what do i do after? put one one side and the other the other side? with the car running?

check the relays first since you have no fan at all.To check the resistor remove it from the car and test between all 3 pins the meter should beep wherever you put the test probes if you dont have continuity between all the pins the resisror is fooked.the resistor puts the fan on at low speed during normal driving and constantly cycles on and off keeping the temperature low
