Has the block been painted? I always wonder if shot blasting an engine prior to strip down would finish it off like new.
Even the bottom pulley looks nice. Bolts look new too. I want a new pulley as there is a bit of corrosion on mine. £55 for a new one...
Is your rear rocker cover breather connected to anything? I see the later EW engines with the tall rocker covers have a breather on the inlet cam cover too. Any rally or touring car EW engine seem to have a breather on the front cover. Do you think having one would be an advantage? |
Yes.... the block got painted. I have to say the whole thing impresses me. Charlie has a good engine builder. He has replace everything that needed doing. In the bag of bits that came back with the engine are some nice surprises.
A huge quantity of bolts
The old tappet buckets
The old springs
The old bottom end shells
The old pistons and rods
Old gaskets
I am not listing everything but suffice to say there is a lot of stuff.
The breather is to be connected to a catch tank. Small piece of tubing and a filter on the tank. I have had the end of the original breather tube covered to see what comes out and I have to say the old engine was not a big breather. The new one will need to breath me thinks.
Fancy a poke at the end HP figure as much as I know you dont like to "label" an engine

Engine is back in car tonight.... SAE 30 to run it in for a couple of hours and then miller oil
The only issue is what grade to use.... I am swayed toward CFS 5W/40
I will get some pictures up tomorrow of it fitted back in and see if I can scrounge a digital camcorder to capture the fire up

don't know much about VR1, but they got 10w30 and 20w50 oil.
i presume he mean the 10w30 oil.
see this:
www.bobistheoilguy.com...er=1452700
base on additive all racing oil are pretty much similar; higher does of ZDDP (>1000ppm; if you have cat then beware.....) and depends on brands some will have moly (redline, royalpurple, mobil) as well; generally lower level of detergent means more frequence oil change; also reduce the chances of detonation.
however; as far as i remember, VR1 wasn't truely synthetic oil, it is mainly group 3 base oil; moreover, the ZDDP level was not amazing high compare to the others.
better to get something better. i know miller CFS is quite commonly used in UK and in US people tends to use redline, amsoil or royal purple; those are truely synthetic oil
just my little though really.

if you are worried you can run oil analysis of the new oil (VOA) and used oil after each oil drain (UOA) to monitor the health of the engine.
