What is it about them that makes them so weak? Mine has always been clunky and hard to put into gear from day one but it is just getting worse. I'm beginning to think it needs reconditioning

They aren't weak. They are built for their purpose. It's when people fit too big of wheels, do traffic light grand prix's and don't look after them that they become weak

Nothing wrong with MA box if its used correctly / looked after.

Its operator abuse / neglect that kills them.

If I cant kill a MA box then there is nothing wrong with the design Wink

It's all to do with the previous owner as it has always been like it quite bad, but seems to be getting worse, and I change gear at 2.5k to 3k when urban driving

Mine could do with the linkage rods replacing in the not to distant future, other then that the MA box is fine.

Newer 206 with MA box have cable gear selector Laughing

Its 75w80 I need right?

Haha, always best to have a spare

Seabook: I've read about BE swaps being done, but wouldn't the gear ratios be too long for a 1.4?

Make sure it's not loosing its oil from the various seals.

Make sure you put the correct grade and type of gear oil in there.

Don't ram the gears into place.

Sorted.
