Hey guys!! (Car is a W reg (2000) 206 GTI preplex)

well after my last fart on with a snapped battery earth strap, some problems have started again!!

first happend last night, pulled out the petrol station, steady away and all the electrics went off, dials dropped down, lights went off, clock/date reset and HU went off, everything basically. Lasted about a second and then all lkicked back into life. Must of been doing about 20mph.

it happend again this morning while doing 60mph on the motorway, first off the HU flickerd then the above happend again, last about 1-2 seconds again then kicked back into life.

has happend AGAIN tonight, cruising at 30mph in 5th (with a car behind me!) done the exact same thing again but this time i pulled over quickly.

turned the engine off, waited a second or 2 then put the key to the second notch, all working fine, headlights back on etc started up let it sit for 5 then drove off again.

when it happend tonight i had had the heaters on full heat + speed directed at the passenger seat as id spilt a drink. after it happend i left them off, thinking somthing had got to hot. all was ok, pulled onto the motorway, turned them back on and within 5 seconds it done it AGAIN, coincidence maybe? i dont no.. on al occasions i have had the heaters on ...

everytime this happens the engine stays running, brakes, steering etc but the dials will drop to the resting position and no electrics work at all.

when i switched the key to the 2nd notch tonight after it died there was alot of quiet ticking/clicking from the fusebox area for around 5 seconds....??

i have no idea what the hell is causing this, but considering id just come off some dark country roads this could of been a totally different type of thread im making now, if at all!!

it surely cant be the battery earth strap as the engine stays running, ive also checked this and all is ok.

maybe somthing causing a surge, overheating, or well i just dont no, hence why im asking here!!

any help would be great as this cant go on!!

thanks,

Karl.

What exactly would i be looking for? blowen fuses, corrosion, melted plastic?

i honestly dont have a clue when it comes to electrics to a "dummys" guide is essential lol

as for have the batt/alt tested, can anywhere do that??

1) They won't fob you off.

2) With engine off:

12.75V = Brand spanking new and healthy

12.50V = Getting on a bit but OK

12.25V = On its last legs

12.00V = Might as well chuck it

3) With engine running and alternator working:

above 13.55V means the alternator is charging the battery.

The above is my guide from memory..
I hope you like it.

thanks for that mate.

going to pop down tomorow and get it done.

Also got the car in the garage for a rear hub change, going to mention it to them and see if they can put it on a diagnostics and find the fault as surely it would be registered on the ECU...
