When I was 18 beer cost 99p a pint and petrol was £1.746 a gallon (38.4p/litre) so a bit pointless giving a price and saying "when I was 18" due to the change in the economy.

We all know that insurance costs change from street to street, with where the car is parked and the experience of the driver. So whatever someone else has been quoted, it's unlikely that another person (even if they live next door) will get the same quote.

When I was 18, I had a Golf GTI MK1, Cost £500 a year to insure. Mind you, it was so long ago, it was also insured against falling off the edge of the earth.

It seems anyone learning to drive now is being completely priced out the market. I spoken to a guy who just turned 19, hes just passed his test and can't get insured on anything for less than 4 grand.

A guy I went to school with and passed the same time as me, is paying £3000 on his corsa c 1.2 sxi - but I think that is mostly down to the choice of car, and I do not know if he has made any claims or where he lives now though.

The new law on not deciding price based on sex isn't going to help when it comes in december. Instead of lowering mens and increasing womens to make them meet in the middle, they will use it as an excuse to raise both quite a lot.

my 1.1 at 19 was 1100 TPFT and to insure the GTi i went to from january to september was an extra £400ish, now with 3 years no claims and the missus learning to drive on my policy it is £670 TPFT on my 2.0 HDi DTurbo whidh i still think is ridiculous as the car is a cat D write off and cant be worth much more than £500 itself.

Some bad news, insurance prices have risen over 40% in the last yr,

It is a bad state when insuring a 306 cabrio (£285 fully comp) cost less than a honda civic coupe (£345 again fully comp) that's at 33 with 9 yrs (full is at 7 yrs) NCB no points or convictions. Funny thing is I was using compare the meerkat and got a quote back of 126k, I was thinkin if i had that kinda money would I really be drivin a civic coupe.

Bottem line insurance is balls but we all need it to be legal

insurance is crazy and unpredictable, my cheapest quotes came out at 3400 when i first passed my test on a corsa c, managed to get 1 for 1900 with a tracker installed 6k mile limit a year, got quotes for 3k+ on xsi so rang my insurance company and they jus wanted another 400 squid
