Start car from cold and engine idles fine, try and give the engine a bit of a rev and it coughs and splutters and tries to stall...

Will continue to do this untill engine is warm... bit of a smell of petrol in the air tho. When warm, car seems under powered and sounds rough.

its been in the pug garage and no faults on the diagnostic machine... help..!

Hmm, no faults coming up?

Pretty sure I've read on here that problems with either the VVT solenoid or coilpack don't always through up faults?

VVT solenoid is around £80 from Peugeot, and the coilpack is around £120 IIRC.

Another common fault - what plugs are you using? NGK do not go well with Peugeot coilpacks!!

Hopefully others will advise of other, cheaper ways to fix your problem.

Couldnt this be the idle control valve or maybe even electronic choke not working?

The electronic choke is a very long shot really, i dont really know how it works on a 180.

Rich could be right as well. Hard to know exactly where the fault lies without changing stuff. Annoying I know

sounds similar to a problem i had in my gti 137, turned out to be the coilpack

Check the spark plugs are bosch

Check the coolant sensor is about 1volt when the engine is at 80oc, and about 3.5volts when its cold

Check the map/maf

Ive had issues with the VVT solenoid in the past, replaced it cleared the faults on the ecu and it was spot on.

Ive only replaced my spark plugs a few months back when it had a service. denso irridium ones.

Im thinking the coolent sensor, as the temperature does fluctuate a bit, .. where is this situated?

The garage were baffled and said to use a few tins of engine flush to clear any build up of crap. they had the diagnostic machine on it and everything was fine.

Get them to stick the Co2 probe up its a**e.... if its running weak it will show it. That said the ETS will give bad readings on the gauge and cause poor starting (usually from hot though)

Like lee said Peugeots only work well with Bosch plugs Smile Change them to Bosch, doesn't matter that you've just changed them!

1) There is no idle control valve on a 180
2) There is no electronic choke on any car these days. It uses the coolant temperature to determine the amount of fuel to inject into the engine.

at a guess i would say coolant temp sensor, i have it as quite a common fault on mini's (different make i know but exact same symptoms). the sensor reads wrong so doesn't add or reduce the fuel as required. would start there mate. as i guess i would say its located on the n/s of your engine bay on the thermostat housing
