Hi all,
For the last few weeks/months I've been able to hear/feel a rattle towards the back of the car and have unsuccessfully tried several times to identify it.
I've been under the car banging various things to see what made a noise, and came up with the following:
Spare wheel basket - removed (spare wheel is dangerous and unscrews itself anyway)
Exhaust Pipe - haven't changed anything since before rattle began. Rubber "holders" are fine
Heat Shield (against what I think is the handbrake cable) - have wedged it with foam
This rattle is very prominent when going down a bumpy road at any speed, or when I go through 60-65, it turns into a constant "du-du-du-du-du-du-du" noise from the same area and I can feel it in the bottom of my seat. As far as I know, wheel/tyre balance should be fine. It sounds almost metallic.
Today though, when banging things with my palm under the car, I noticed the fuel tank sounds as if there's a ping-pong ball in there. It's a loud bouncy, echoey noise which could potentially be the thing I'm looking for. Is that possible/normal?
Anyone got any more suggestions?
There's another noise coming from the front divers side wheel area that sounds like a screw being shaken in a metal tub when going over bumps. Nothing seems loose that I can see.
Sorry for the essay!
Cheers,
Tom
Tom

When we took our 205 apart we found an old fuel pump that had been dropped into the tank! Could be the same for you?

Does the car slow in anyway? As if you have rear drums the shoes in the drum could of broken and be rolling about in the drum. Either that or your rear suspension beam and torsion bars are knackered

Thanks for your thoughts - I think I might have found something. If I really push the exhaust mid-section, it does hit the underside of the car. I thought it was coming from further back than that, but it would explain why I can feel it through my seat!
Is there anything that resists those sort of temperatures that I could wrap around it to stop it hitting?
Thanks

They normally have the crappy tyre weld stuff that ruins the tyre.

I woudnt want to be wrapping anything around the exhaust, I'd rather get it fitted properly so it wasn't hitting anything. As for feeling heat from it through your seat

I would have thought that he would be feeling the vibration through the seat...

Yes I can feel the vibration/banging, not the heat!!
I need some welding done underneath next month, so I will get it looked at properly when it's on the ramps. I just wanted to stop it banging until then. A closer look at the exhaust showed it doesn't quite follow the groove in the floor - it's a couple of inches to one side, so that's the problem.
