Hi guys, I'm new to this forum and my knowledge of cars is limited so please go easy on me!

I bought my 206 gti 180 a few days ago and its awesome! However, none of the history shows the cam belt has been replaced so I booked it into a local garage (non peugeot) and asked them to change the cam belt, water pump and tensioners as advised on here. Anyway, when they came to do it they said that the locating pins where in different positions to that shown in the book they had and they didn't want to touch it in case they couldn't get the timing right once the new belt was on. They showed me the book and I double checked that they were on the correct page for the gti 180 and weren't mistaken for the normal gti and it checked out. They then showed me that the arrangement was that of a 2.2l 406 and suggested that the cam head might have been replaced previously to give more power. I did notice however that the book They had was from 2005 and my car was registered in September 2005.

Therefore I have the following questions:

Has the standard cam been changed on the gti 180 from the early models meaning his book is out of date ?
If the cam has been modified, would a peugeot dealer be able to change the cam belt and anyone got ideas of cost?

I was quoted 470 from the local dealer including vat for the lot which I thought was steep.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

They should know that won't happen. Anyway, you lock the pulleys not the cam.

Thanks for the response Edward.

Not too sure to be honest and my knowledge is limited unfortunately. The garage had a generic book that contained all makes and models of cars and drawings showing the cam belt arrangement and that's what they work off and with it looking different they didn't want to touch it.

When you say they should know that won't happen are you referring to the modification of the cam head?

Have you heard of anything this before?

Will the peugeot garage know what to do?

Thanks again and sorry I can't give you any more info.

Actually, having taken another look at the picture you've shown I remember the mechanic telling me that the drawing showed 3 locating holes but my car only had 1, so yes I think my car looks like the picture shown. Should it look like this?

Peugeot are rubbish with these engines as well. To be honest the 180 is a bloody nightmare to change the belt on but then after doing it a few times you get the knack.
