there's a 'clunking' noise coming from the nearside front. if i come to speedbump, go to the right so the n/s/f wheel goes over the bump you can hear it clunk, hi the bump with the o/s/f wheel, no clunk.
ive not had chance to have a proper look yet, but im guessing either track rod, droplink or worn bush of somesort?

right...
anti roll bar bushes, wishbone bushes, droplinks, balljoints, top mounts all absolutely fine.
the only other thing i can think of is the shocker itself?
edit, track rods ok too!

Double check your anti roll bar link by remove it completely from the suspension, check the stiffness of both of the arb link ball joint. It will cuase clunking problem if one of the ball joint is loose (usually the one link to anti roll bar) and another ball joint is stiff.
If the ruber seal is till in good condition u can solve the clunking problem by installing the loose section to the strut and stiff section to the bottom on both sides.
Would cost u a penny by doing this, just need some time. Worth a try, it works for me.

Aren't the top shock mount bearings prone to failing and clocking too?

I had the same problem. It would knock going over bumps and if off the throttle on a cobbled street you thought the car was going to fall to bits, it would also knock under hard acceleration when changing from 1st to 2nd gear.
Everything looked fine until i got it on a ramp at my local garage.
On the ramps it was easier to check the condition of the wishbones and compare one side to the other....mine turned out to be the front inner bush. It didn't look too bad on the car but when I changed the wishbone and inspected it off the car there was loads of play in it. My drivers side is just starting to knock slightly now so that'll get done within the next week or so.
Europarts sell the replacement wishbone bushes (lemforder) if you have a press, else it's just easier to change the whole wishbone.
