can anybody point me in the right direction of a 'how to' for changing the fan belt on a 2.0 gti???

Easy job. Take a note of the routing, buy a 16mm spanner and with it lever the tensioner to reduce the tension on the belt.
Adjustable spanners are hard work (heavy and can round the bolt head) so make sure you use a proper 16mm spanner.

In the picture you can see the AC pump, bottom pulley on the crank and two bolt heads further up. The top bolt is for the tensioner. Put a spanner on it to lever the tension away.

that bolt in the middle, so at the top of those two bigger pulleys, is that the right one?? anyway on mine this pully is fairly wobbly kind of, is it on a spring or something??
