Hi all new to the site, was previously a member but lost all account details.
Can anyone tell me what may be causing this strange problem??
206 1.4 petrol 51 plate 2002.

I did a search and could not find a definate answer..
Some days i come to the car and it starts and runs fine, other times the ignition will just click or starter will turn slowly as if the battery is flat,i have checked this out with another good battery but still the same response.
While it does not start it does strange things, wipers come on there own and also headlights have to,but when trying the fan heater it will not work until cars started, and the clock/date reset back to zero, very strange??
Also the car as occassionally cut out while driving. If i try bump starting it,it will kick into life.

I need this sorted but not sure where to start looking,as its intermittant...
A mechanic i had look at it thinks it maybe the starter motor at fault, but im not to sure,as when it does turn the engine over it seems fine.

hope anyone can help,as its my girls car and she keeps getting stranded.

Check the earth strap has a good connection, a bad earth can cause the issues you describe.
Please Dont take any of my posts as written fact. They are simply my opinion and although to the best of my knowledge true, the information within them may well be incorrect.

Any work you undertake as a result of my posts is done so at your own risk Smile

Earth strap. The current is trying to earth itself elsewhere, so things are turning on

Hi,the earth from the battery to the engine and body you mean.
As it goes about 2 years ago the car went completely dead,AA came out,i was not there, and a wire had burnt through on something and he resoldered it,and told here to get it replaced as it would not last, but what wire im not sure as my girl cannot remember,i wonder if that is the earth starting to breakdown, would this caiuse it to be intermittent tho?

I have replaced the earth strap from the battery, this was the wire the AA rejoined/soldered,even tho the connection looked good still. After fitting new earth, the car tried to turn over, but im wondering wether the old earth has drained the battery down over time,as once i put jump leads on it,it fired up??

Anyway will see how it goes, and if needed i will take the battery off to give it a good charge,if it continues to turn over slowly.

Also how do i know if its multiplexed system or not as i was going to try resetting the bsi? It has a stalk on the steering collumn for radio and menu,if that helps.

Thanks for the info so far, will keep checking things out that are suggested.

Think i have finally now sorted the problem out, changed the earth strap from battery, but still starter was sometimes slow and sometimes would start the car,it turns out there was enough voltage in the battery but the cells must of gone, due to the earth not doing its job correctly, hence draining the battery and ruining it.
Fitted a new battery yesterday and all seems fine now. Thanks all for your input, well done guys.
