It feels like I am at the petrol station all the time, when I first start the engine I would be able to smell fuel coming out the exhaust from inside then it would go away when I drive off. And when I would go to where the exhaust is the smell is very strong, it only started doing this recently could it be the exhaust needs changing or could it be it is letting out more fuel than it should? I know it is letting out more fuel than it did but it's the cold weather right?

And I hate the smell of petrol so yes I would go about changing the exhaust if this is the problem. Smile

Thanks.

I wouldn't think it's a problem with the exhaust itself.

Look for a leak underneath, close to the rear where the fuel tank
is with pipes coming out of it etc..

How long has this been happening?
If it had been a problem with the emissions the MOT should have picked it up. Get the oxygen sensor reading cheacked to see if unburnt fuel is passing through the exhaust, and unburnt fuel passing through a catalytic converter can be very expensive.

Does the smell get stronger if you put the interior fan on? Follow the fuel lines from the tank to te engine checking for leaks, especially on the joints.

This could also be linked to your kangaroo problem

My car failed/passed MOT every year since 2006 after checking its history, this year surprisingly passed first time. One of the headlights was only secured with one underneath bolt and I thought this would even fail MOT?

I haven't had time to look at it but I doubt there are any obvious leaks and I do know it will only stink of fuel when the engine is not warmed up, when this happens the exhaust will produce a much deeper tone and some sort of "clicking" sound until the engine is around 70-90 then it is fine. Apart from the smell shouldn't this be normal? it's a 4x3 exhaust also so it takes all the room in the arch.

The kangaroo problem I had since day 1 the smell of fuel I had since the cold weather arrived.
