hi guys
ever since i have had my gti the coolant temp gauge has always sat dead on 90*c but I've noticed recently its been sitting at 80*c
i was just wondering if anybody else has had this and how they cured it? i going to try cleaning the temp sensor tomorrow see if that cures it otherwise I'm guessing it will need replacing?

Lees point is quite valid.
Your engine temp will be lower in freezing conditions due to the ambient air temperature cooling the radiator more. You'll probably find that even sat in a traffic jam the cooling fan kicks in less frequently than if it was the middle of summer. The car takes longer to heat up and you are also pulling colder air through the heater matrix which has added cooling effect on the coolant flowing around the engine.

You do know the coolant temp gauge is at the bottom of the rev counter on the GTI?

Recently has just turned into 6 months. Were you not concerned about this 5 months ago?

Wassup I'm on the same boat as you since before the summer on my 1.4i.
Generaly much lower engine temp readings than I'm used to (have the car for 5 years).
It takes ages for it to warm up, and temp sits at 68-70 even after long drive with high load/revs.
It will only pick-up temp when stationary for ages, obviously.
However, I have concluded it is to do with the wax mechanical thermostat in the coolant outlet (~90 C threshold)
and NOT the temp sensor itself, as I have checked with diag tool and sensor seems to be telling the truth.
Haven't got round to replacing it yet but I will in the next couple of weeks along with coolant re-newal, flush etc.
Hope this helps, and never give up on anything mate.

I think you'll find that Lee & Macca1411 have come up with the correct answer. Its WINTER and Im pretty sure every make of car will take longer to heat up and run cooler when its COLD outside !!! My 1.4 takes twice as long to reach its normal operating temp and also runs about 3-5 degrees cooler even when Im on the motorway!!! Cleaning the temp sensor wont make any difference unless you've not been using any anti-freeze and its caked in lime-scale and crud !

If the temp gauge is taking a long time to increase or staying low in any weather, it's very likely the thermostat is stuck OPEN! This means the coolant simply gets pumped around and isn't getting a chance to warm up thoroughly. It's a common problem on my Alfa 156.
