ive got the elm327 bluetooth adapter and running torque pro. cheap and does everything you need

Definitely a little gizmo you could show off to your friends without telling them about the adapter. See how many of them go searching for the bluetooth of their cars ;p
Is there any way the cheap ones can damage the car?

Hard wire it in for a better connection. I would anyway. Plus your OBD put will always be free as well.
