Evening all,

Now i understand this is most likely a daft question or come up a 100 times but ive been offered a sweet deal to do a straight swap for my car for a 2002 206 GTI. Ive been told that the guy has recently changed a wheel bearing (not sure if its front or rear yet) and since then the ABS warning light has been showing on the dash. He says that its just because "he hasnt reset it or something" now im now a mechanic so i need some advice on this.

Are the wheel bearings like on some of my previous cars and come with the brake hubs attached? Or is changing a bearing even likely to set a warning light off?

I have to ask as i do i pretty much trust the guy ive dealt with him in the past and he didnt let me down but i dont want to get 20 miles down the road and find im in a duffer

Cheers for any help or advice you can give on this

More than likely the ABS ring has broken.

changing the bearing wont cause a fault, also from experience when the ABS issue is resolved the light goes out on its own (no need to re-set the ecu ect).

As said its most likely the abs ring or sensor.

EDIT: The ABS ring is a gear shaped ring, the ABS sensor reads the bumps on the ring, if it is cracked the ABS sensor cant count the bumps.

They are on the front drive shaft or IIRC behind the rear wheel bearing, some garages will try to mack you buy the full drive shaft but i think you can get the rings on there own.....but its weather a garage will want to fit it on its own.

also while im on a roll of losing man points showing how little i know about cars....

Does the ABS work like the SRS system? In which i mean when the SRS light is showing on the dash it stops the system from working/firing the air bags? So would the ABS be "off" for want of a better word

Yes, the ABS will be off if there is a warning on the dash.

Just remembered that on the front the ABS ring comes with the CV joint..which is a cheaper option to a drive shaft.

It could cost £150 to repair (probably on over estimate)

Just make sure all the other ABS rings are fine, check the rear axle for play and all the other usual car things.

Why does he want to swap his car for yours?

I drove around in my 180 for nearly a year with no ABS, I think as long as you dont act like a d**k you wont end up backwards in a hedge lol

You will need it sorted for the MOT though.
