What I don't understand is how on earth they can be legal from factory, a range rover went past me the other day and absolutely blinded me with them

I've never had a problem with factory HID lights.

Are you sure someone's not done a DIY conversion on this Range Rover?

Correct legal factory HID install for the UK will have:

Headlamp designed for the HID bulb.

Automatic headlamp leveling either built in to the headlamp unit OR it can use the cars self leveling suspension system

Headlamp washers.

No idea it was an 11 plate with a 40 / 50 year old guy driving so I highly doubt it was a conversion, I see them all the time but this time it was just impossible to see when he was coming towards me.

I think if they are fitted to projector lamps (not reflector lamps) and fitted with washers and correctly aligned, I don't see the problem.

Take it up with the department for transport then.

Car manufacturers have to stick to the rules, what makes you so special you can just ignore them then? Rolling Eyes

If they are installed right there are no problems. Admittedly most people don't. I have mates with them fitted properly. Even in reflectors they not blinding in the slightest as they are the reflector designed bulbs and they point right down. Got one mate though with them pointed dead level in reflectors with standard bulbs in not the anti-glare ones and they are deadly.

I get pulled over quite a lot and nobody has ever said anything. Rule of the road keep your car maintained and be polite and 90% of police will be reasonable with you.

the mot only states that if hid lights are fitted and has washers and/or auto levellers they have to work it doesnt say that it has to have the washers/levellers to pass an mot with hids. looked at the new ministry print out last week. BUUUUUT design and construction i.e. what the police will do you for is a whole different matter

in my opinion if in any doubt about the legality of mods dont bother then that saves the worry and hassle Very Happy

Ban better lighting systems, real smart.

Want to ban better road tyres too? Rolling Eyes

They are not illegal, you have ballasts which adjust as per the HID kit dont you? Just whack some headlamp washers on or dont bother and say they are uprated bulbs

So should the government legalise drugs and tax them?

Actually if it lowers fuel price...

They should legalise weed.

If things like that were legal, then they would be a lot easier to combat....eg the amount of people who smoke

Why ban them at all they are much better than s**t standard bulbs my dads Lexus has them
Standard with levelling and washers, and sent me to get some for the pug fitted and levelled by kwikfit never been pulled not a second look by police about them ever! You can see much more with them than normal bulbs the first "mod" I/dad approved of! Just a quick one does that mean even with angel eye projector headlights they're illegal unless they have self levelling and washers??

Haha yeah everyone is entitled to their opinions but I think they are a good invention/mod and as lee said they make the uk millions, everyone has them and if not fitted correctly blind people yes they shouldn't be as easy to get hold of should only sell them and where you buy them from make it mandatory that they fit them if they're "qualified" (what ever you want to say) to do so then happy days no one is blinded people can see more and making money for the suffering economy!

My dad has got a 2011 Mercedes E63 with factory xenons and the difference in night vision they make is astonishing, i have also passed him several times going the other way and they are no brighter than halogen, so I definitly agree with judgey on this, they are a massive improvement if they are fitted correctly
