I had exactly the same thing, still did it after fitting new screws, took the bugger off in the end.

I took the cover off and makes no difference in my case 
Anyway ill leave it off till I've had car serviced.
Does it matter if cover is off? It was very clean and plasticy underneath. Not what I expected at all.
And the clips are pants!

Its had no ill effect on me. I stillhave an annoying rattle from somewhere as I said in my other post, either clutch or aux belt or manifold or cv boot, cars rattle, end of
