I had the car in for its MOT today and it failed on the horn.
They spent 2 hours trying to fix it, they have tested the earths and said they were fine, they checked the condition of the connectors and they are also ok.
They have given me the number of an auto spark who might be able to help me but untill i get the car fixed it doesnt have an MOT and I cant drive it.
The garage added that it could be two things causing the problem
1. the 'spool' in the steering wheel might be faulty as the airbag light doesnt come on when the car does its initial 'self checks' when you start the engine.
2. The fuse box under the bonnet might be faulty and thats whats causing the problem.
One thing I have found out from the freezing cold hours ive spent today tring to fix it is that when I put a volt meter across the contacts of F13 (Horn) I dont get any voltage when the horn is depressed on the steering wheel.
Can anyone shed some light on this as I would much rather sort out the issue myself than pay someone to fix it, which is probably what I will end up doing anyway

Have you tried a new horn? Mine failed, i replaced it with a new one. If the airbag light doesnt come on when you start the car, isnt that a fail as well? Or is that one of the up coming things?

Remove drivers airbag & check there is + 12 volts on the single red wire clipped on the back of it.
Now check the black wire screwed in to the steering wheel is earthed.
Those are the horn push wires.

 ,this is the simplest way to test a horn,but becareful when you take airbag off,and make sure the battery is off so that you don't get a timing bomb in hand....hehe

Wouldnt I need to have the battery connected to test the +12v supply?
Dont know how brave I am to remove the airbag then reconnect the battery.
If there is a +12v supply where can I go from there and if not then what should I do next?

All it will do is flag up an airbag fault & disable the srs system.
Refit airbag, turn ignition on, srs system will do its self test & it then should be fine.

it will be the rotary coupler in the steering wheel or behind it. With the two problems linked to the airbag and horns, both being in the steering wheel, it seems highly likely to me that it is that

Are you talking about the 'spool' behind the airbag? it looks to me like a large fishing reel with plastic wires coming from it
Have you had this problem yourself? Do you know if its difficult to replace?
If it straight forward then I will buy one tomorrow and see if it fixes it,

yeah thats the kiddie. i cant seem tp find anything about them though not for 206's and way. Not gone that far into mine
But the rovers/mg's i work on were quite common failure points
