The engine sounds somewhat rough and noisy at high rpm with ever so slight loss of torque.
Thinking of adjusting the tappets myself so any tips or info would be appreciated.
Also does the plastic cam-belt cover have to be taken-off to turn the engine while doing it?
Car has done 94000 Km, much of it in traffic so the engine will have rotated for a lot longer.

TU3 engine that the OP has uses shim's, it doesnt have hydraulic tappets.

Remove the spark plugs (makes the engine easier to turn). Turn the engine from the crankshaft, so yes the cover has to come off, from what I can remember its only held on with 5 bolts. Unfortunatly I cant remember the adjustment gaps. Oh yeah, do them when the engine is cold, hope Im not teaching you to suck eggs !!!!

Thanks for replies.
Gaps are 0.4mm exhaust and 0.2mm inlet. Yes it's adjust when cold with this engine.
Good point on the spark plugs.
Will let everyone know if I manage to ruin the engine or made an improvement.

Damn!
Done it and it's a different engine.
Forget modifications etc, this is extremely important and makes a massive difference.
1) Quieter, smoother engine.
2) Torque has shot-up between 1000 - 2500 rpm.
3) Higher top speed due to reduced growling above 3500 rpm.
4) Less fuel consumption
I highly recomend people do this, especialy after 60K miles.

In what order do you adjust the tappets on the 206, and which is cylinder 1 on the 206 is it the cam pulley end or se it work backwards like the injectors ?

Cylinder 1 is on the right looking at the engine from the front, opposite end of the cam-wheel.
This is a procedure which requires skill and repetative 'combing' untill the valves settle back down, say every 600 miles for at least 3-4 times (!)
The closer the tappet get's to the valve pins the quieter the engine but with less power/torque.
The further away you get (up to a point), more 'rasp' but better power and less fuel consumption.
I set at standard gap (0.20mm inlet / 0.40mm outlet) and live with some ping of one valve at idling.
The engine has to be stone-cold, preferably overnight. (even though Peugeot say minimum 2 hours).
It's certainly worth the effort, but if you're asking the adjusting order I would strongly recommend that you refrain for the time being, and thoroughly research the subject for the 206 TU3 lump before you even think of taking the cover off. www.peugeot206cc.co.uk/repair-206/

Thanks, I'll have a go at the weekend. The only Eason I asked about cylinder 1 is that the last time I did this was on a mk1 ford fiesta and cylinder 1 was the cam sprocket end

1) Jack-up the front-left wheel and stick it in 4th gear to turn-over the engine slowly, only forwards.
2) Mind the two spacers under the valve-cover, they stick to the top then fall off into the cam area.
3) Use gloves, and you must use a troque wrench at 9 Nm for tightening-up the lock-nuts,
otherwise subsequent adjustments are going to be a nightmare OR you'll end-up with a loose tappet which you don't want.
4) You must reset the auto adaptation by dis-connecting battery for half an hour so it can re-learn running parameters with the new adjustment.
5) Don't forget to dis-engage 4th gear before starting the car again..
