Tearing my hair out over the 206 as usual. Evil or Very Mad

Whenever I move away at a junction I get this blowing noise coming from the front of the car. It sounds just like an exhaust blowing. However the noise does not happen on idle, or if it is revved in neutral. It only happens when accelerating.

The whole exhaust system is new since December 2011 and two garages have ruled out any exhuast / catalyst problem.

I've taken the car to the local dealer and an independent garage and neither can establish for sure whats causing the noise. However they have both advised that it might be the spring bolts between the catalyst and the front pipe.

The independent suggested I go back to Peugeot as they cant be sure. Peugeot arent sure either and are estimating this could run into hundreds of pounds to diagnose and fix.

Searching this forum doesnt bring up any posts that match the issue precisely.. leaving me in quite a conundrum.

Has anyone heard of a 206 making blowing and rattling noises from the front when accelerating that are not related to the exhaust system?

Any advice would be most appreciated before I take it in Smile

Not sure if the head shield has been checked. Is it an easy thing to find and check?

Would it also cause a blowing noise if it has a problem?

Thanks Smile

Sorry that was a typo, should have written heat sheild. Its just a metal surround that sits over the exhaust manifold.

The blowing sound, wouldn't be an induction roar would it? Split in your intake pipe?

I'll find a heat sheild pic now...

Its the silver half circle thing at the front, lambda sensor poking out of it. Just a thin metal cover. When the engine is cold have a good pull of it, see if the bolt holes are worn/broken and if there is much play in it.

It is indeed an induction roar, its pretty loud but only when pulling away.

Perhaps the intake pipe is split? From what Peugeot are saying they cant get to the part they need without £££ worth of investigation. If the in-take pipe is split will it really cost alot of £££ to fix? Sad

Thanka for pointing out the heat shield - i'll be checking that out tomorrow! Smile

Ignore them monkeys - i really hate dealerships! Very easy to check yourself, just take the pipe off that runs between the throttle body & the air box, look for any cracks, splits, holes etc.
Make sure the airbox is seated and sealed correctly. Whilst you're at it check your air filter is ok.

Hi

I never solved this I'm afraid. Despite getting a number of opinions. No one was able to identify the cause without taking out the engine. However the dealer I sold the car to didn't seem too concerned about- the problem, so not sure what to think!

Check:

Exhaust manifold gasket

Exhaust bottom spring flexi-joint gasket (mid-pipe to cat coupling assembly)

Intake/exhaust valve tappet clearance (esp. if revs 'hang')
