hi
im still finding my way through 206's and have a question . my headlights went through okay on the mot but was advised to change some as they could be blinding other drivers -so they replaced them with these i1065.photobucket.com/...CN0299.jpg
H4's are on the reciept -this okay or are there better?
on checking the other headlamp i saw this i1065.photobucket.com/...CN0298.jpg
now, i have never seen this on any of the cars i have owned, so can someone please tell me what this is/if its necessary/if there a better alternative, as it looks horrid.
i have been scouring the forums but no photo have i found - just info about different bulbs, and if there are photos or explainations then i apologise for my feeble efforts in finding them Rolling Eyes

Not sure what you are asking here but they both look h7.

The one has the cap is to prevent dazzle so is likely to be the dipped beam/ driving beam. The other which is cap free is more likely the main/full beam. i cant remember if the genuine valeos have the cover as it might not be nessesary with the black tip on the h7 bulb for the anti dazzle.

from the very unclear pics, it looks like you have crystal headlights, which are a split dipped and main beam (both H7 bulbs). so how did you manage to fit a H4 in a single full beam position, this is why it would be dazzleing to on coming cars, and any mechanic should have been able to spot this.

as you can see from the above image there are 4 sections in the headlight, the part clostest the left and circular shape is the indicator, the part next to that is the FULL/MAIN beam (where i believe your bulbs are), the next part is the dipped beam, then the outer part (by the wing) is where the sidelight is.

i would ask somewhere like halfords or even the main dealer to check you have the right bulbs in place.

as for the gray metal bit, it helps to prevent dazzle to oncoming cars.

Edit: took so long to type, people got there before me.

further to this:
i have just removed the bulb and it is a H7 12v55w made in germany.
it was definatly alot smaller than intended as it was not a good fit.
i now have the problem of removing the shade inside the lamp - if this is necessary (please any advice on this ).i assume its not meant to be there as it is full of dead insects which have now fallen into the lamp itself :/ i'm gonna have to remove the headlight(s) to get rid of them.
im also guessing the bulb holder shoud be round, which this is not - it looks like at some time it has been cut (a small block at the bottom) in which this shade is attached to.
oh and yes crystals/ on about the bulb down from sidelight.
jeez i guess i brought the car with the 'little annoying problems'
any further info would be real nice of you all as im getting more confused by the second lol

mm ive just re read your post ghosty- the garage definatly changed the bulbs in the holder next to the indicator with H4'''S

The cap in the bulb is supposed to be there on the bulbs that help you see down a long dark road. The set of lights are supposed to be h7 55w. If you even attemp to change them to h4 you will find it won't fit your cars wiring!

You should have 2 bulbs that are h7 one for dipped and one for raised. 1 bulb that is intended for use as a sidelight and one that is a shade of amber.

H4 bulbs are used in the older frosted headlights(you have clear crystal)

They haven't put H4's in....for a start they would not even fit and secondly your car would not have the wiring for them.

By the sounds of it you are you going to be looking for a new headlight if you have broken the shade off.

ah ha
thanks for all your replys.
i went and knocked at the door of the garage owner (he's local).
i showed him the recipt for the fitted bulbs (H4's) and asked him how .He got the mechanic straight away and he checked the lamps.
It turns out that the paperwork was wrong and they had actually fitted H7's.
Sorta embarressed but was laughing.
Yes the lamp cover inside is supposed to be there aswell. The flys and stuff in the lamp turned out to be the cover paint on the tip of the bulb, to which he said they would take my car in and remove all reside, aswell as servicing my car for no labour charge.
I dont think i would of got very far until i mentioned 206info.co.uk, to which one of his relatives is a member aswell Very Happy
So, thank you 206info - seems your name is known even here in Lincolnshire

Good job you didn't remove the lamp covers as that would of resulted in a brand new pair of headlights needed
