Faulty speedo - can I swap a petrol cluster into my diesel?

Hi,

The speedo has gone wrong in my 2001 HDI - pre-plexed, cluster has 2 sockets with a rev counter. The courtesy light flashes when moving with the door open, so I guess it's not a sensor problem, and I've had the instrument cluster to bits and the needle seemed firmly in place, free to move but not to be slipping on the spindle. However, the needle either doesn't move or flits about and gets stuck in various places, so I'm assuming the stepper motor is having problems...

As I see it my options are to get a new stepper motor for the speedo or a whole secondhand instrument cluster.

Now...the question Smile

I've seen quite a few cheap-ish 2-plug instrument clusters from petrol cars about that look the same as mine (2-sockets with rev counter etc.) am I OK to stick one of these into my HDI diesel, or is there something that means they are petrol/diesel specific?

The rev range will be different, apart from that they should be ok.

Nope - getting a cluster isn't a problem - there are ones from diesels available too, it's just that they're more expensive and there are less of them. What I'm wondering is whether the cheaper and more plentiful clusters can be used in my diesel anyway.

Managed to get hold of a diesel cluster in the end for a good price.

However...mine's a 2001 HDI and this cluster came from 1999 - I don't know if that's really relevant as they look the same (bar a slightly different Engine light) but they do have different part/serial numbers.

Anyway...it all works except:

The rev counter doesn't work at all - I'm assuming faulty, that's not such a big deal for me. The needle dips down at ignition on like the speedo, but never climbs from rest.

More importantly...the speedo works but checking with my satnav it's underestimating the true speed by about 2mph i.e. if I'm actually doing 32 the speedo is saying 30. As I seem to have trained myself for 30 on the speedo to actually being about 27, this is a bit of a pain Sad .

Is there an easy way to calibrate the speedo? Can you just record where the needle is at rest, pull it off, and stick it back on a bit lower?

That Thumbs Up should do the trick iirc.

I have just been through the process of repairing a speedo in my daughters 206 which is a 1.4 petrol year 2000 model with a two plug cluster which includes a speedo, rev counter, petrol gauge and temperature gauge and one adjustment rod. I found out about the flashing interior light test from an internet search and this confirmed that the sensor was sending a signal, although I have no idea how the speedo affects the interior light. Cost of a new replecement was about £400 with VAT which is probably not much less that the value of the car.

I saw a diesel version replacement from a breaker on ebay and tried to find out if it would fit the petrol version. The local Peugeot dealer could only advise if I had the registration numbers of both vehicles but said that generally they were different versions and they were not interchangeable. The breaker could not give me the number of the vehicle it came from but I decided to take a chance anyway.

I fitted the diesel version into the vehicle after taking out the bulb for the glow plug indicator and the speedo worked fine, as did the temperature gauge and the fuel gauge but the rev counter did not work and of course the mileometer read the mileage from the breakers vehicle.

I then decided to try to fit one of the stepping motors from the diesel version into the old cluster but found whilst dismantling that all four dials could be removed from the assembly as a complete unit after removal from the black plastic housing. I inserted the whole assembly into the petrol cluster and the speedo, rev counter, fuel gauge and temperature gauge all worked fine and because the circuit board was from the original vehicle the mileometer reading was also correct.

So job done for about £30 instead of £400 or £100 quoted by a speedo specialist repairer.
