So about 2 months ago my clutch died and I replaced it (with an original brand new clutch). Since then it was quite rare but sometimes, when slowing down to a full stop the engine would just stall. The car is usually so quiet I never noticed the engine was shut down till I needed to start moving again.

Now, past 2 days this has happened much much more and I was certain there was something wrong with the clutch so I tested it and it seems it's not. I put the car in neutral and it still happened. My RPM just drops very low and eventually the engine stalls.

What I know : This happens when I let the RPMs drop from >2500 RPM to idle. If I'm under 2500RPM the engine will hold and it will not stall (though the RPM might drop all the way to 300, then manage to climb back up.)

I tried quickly going to ~3000 RPM and then letting it go in neutral and this still happens so it's not the clutch.

When I leave the engine idling I don't see too many fluctuations in the RPM, usually sits very steady at 900RPM and maybe has a bit of play between 850-950 but nothing more.

Anyone have any ideas what this might be? I suspected the stepper motor but as the engine idles very steady I'm not sure that's the cause any more...

Get it plugged into a code reader and see if there are any recorded faults.

PS: Knowing what model, engine type (diesel or petrol) and engine capacity would help others to offer advice but start with fault codes.

Morris 1000, Austin 1100, Escort Mk2, Fiat Mirafiori, Alfa 33, Alfa GT Junior, Alfasud, Alfetta GTV (2x), Alfa 164 3.0 V6, Alfa 164 2.0, Alfa 75 V6, Alfa 156 2.4 (diesel remapped 200bhp), Alfa 147 GTA (3.6 295bhp), Alfa 159 (diesel remapped 245bhp 300ft.lbs @ 2500rpm)

Well it's a 2005 206 XSi... I thought that narrows it down but I guess not in the UK? it's got a 110HP 1.6L petrol engine and that's pretty much the only engine we have here for the 206 XSi....

As for fault codes I'll have to stop by a shop and pay em to plug it in, I'll do that today or maybe tomorrow. As it stands right now the problem has gone to being pretty rare again, in a 20 min drive today it hasn't happened once and yesterday it happened 5 times on the drive to work, and 1 time on the way back...

Maybe it'll fix it self! Smile

try taking the idle control valve out and giving it a quick clean. i had similar problem, every time car revs lowered it used to cut out even sometimes when putting my clutch down coming up to a roundabout or something it would cut out then bump start back up.
A clean with lotoxane solvent cleaner did the trick for me no harm in trying!
Hope this helps
